A Telemarketer, or Call Centre Professional, sells a variety of products, promotes campaigns, and/or collects donations for charities. There are several duties a Telemarketer must carry out during their day-to-day work. General duties and responsibilities they need to excel at include:

What does a Telemarketer do?

Telemarketers spend most of their time making cold calls to potential customers and persuading them to either buy a product or service or donate to a particular charity, depending on where the Telemarketer works. Telemarketers work across a number of industries and may work for any company that has a product or service to sell to customers or businesses. Occasionally, Telemarketers promote certain campaigns such as political movements and candidates in upcoming elections. Generally, Telemarketers will have a set of customers or clients they will call to pitch.

Telemarketer skills and qualifications

Candidates must be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of the product or service they are selling. Equally important, Telemarketers must also possess a particular set of skills, the following being the most important for the position:

  • Communication skills, specifically over the phone
  • Persuasiveness and the ability to convince strangers to take the desired action
  • Persistence and being able to answer questions and address concerns
  • General customer service skills including active listening and empathizing with customer needs
  • Focus and the ability to make multiple sales a day in accordance with established sales quotas
  • Negotiation skills to help the customer understand how the product or service meets their needs
  • Patience to take an appropriate amount of time with sales leads to answer their questions and hear their concerns

Telemarketer experience requirements

Look for candidates who have previous experience in telemarketing and sales or related experience in a customer service role. Candidates that are comfortable speaking on the phone or in their ability to make a sale are more likely to be successful. So candidates who have worked in reception, food service, or retail are likely to have transferrable skills.

Telemarketer education and training requirements

Telemarketer positions do not have standard education and training requirements, but you could seek candidates with a high school diploma or GED. You may need to provide on-the-job training for specific product and service knowledge. Telemarketers may also need coaching that focuses on a phone script and how to keep potential customers engaged in conversation. Mentioning on-the-job training in the job description will attract a wider range of candidates.

Telemarketer salary expectations

According to Indeed Salaries, the average pay for a Telemarketer in Canada is $16.08 per hour. Keep in mind, however, that wages vary based on the experience of the worker, the location, and the hiring company.
