IT Managers are in charge of the technology infrastructure of a company. Essentially, their role is to ensure that all the computers, networks, and programs are running smoothly for everyone at a company. IT Managers also have to oversee a team of IT technicians and delegate tasks accordingly to ensure all the technology is functioning as intended. Additionally, IT Managers will have to oversee the IT budget and ensure effectiveness is always being maximized relative to cost.
IT Manager skills and qualifications
In order to fulfill their duties, effective IT Managers must possess particular skills and qualifications, including:
Proficiency in computer hardware, software, cabling, installation, networking, and security
Team management and leadership skills
Multi-tasking and time management skills
Budget management and optimization skills
Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
IT Manager experience requirements
An IT Manager typically needs at least a few years of experience in a related role to qualify. For larger companies, consider candidates with three to five years of experience as an IT Manager, as there are more employees and security threats to manage. Look for candidates to have some general IT experience along with extra requirements including prior management experience, as IT Managers will be in charge of the IT department.
IT Manager education and training requirements
An IT Manager position requires candidates to have a bachelor’s degree or higher certification in information technology, computer science, software engineering or a related field. One of the most important qualities to look for in a successful IT Manager is leadership. Candidates must be comfortable leading a team of other IT professionals, and make decisions on behalf of the company about topics like security and innovative technology. Other important qualities for an IT Manager include flexibility and creative problem-solving skills. They must know how to teach their team and other employees within the company about how to use various technologies, so communication skills are highly important as well.
What should you look for in an IT Manager resume?
When reviewing resumes for an IT Manager, look for candidates who highlight their leadership abilities or management experience. Of course, technical proficiency is highly important, so prioritize resumes for candidates who have experience working with IT systems. Additional IT-related certifications are an asset, because it shows the candidate’s interest in the field, and ambition to expand their skills and knowledge outside of a traditional education setting. Having experience in multiple areas of IT shows versatility and indicates the candidate is able to keep up with changing technological trends.
Who reports to an IT Manager?
An IT Manager leads the rest of the department, so all IT professionals report to the IT Manager including Specialists and Technicians. They assign tasks to teams, organize projects, and check-in with team members regularly to monitor progress. IT professionals spend a lot of time working on individual tasks, so the environment tends not to be too collaborative. IT Managers need to ensure their team works cohesively and often need to facilitate communication.
Who does an IT Manager report to?
An IT Manager reports to the IT Director or, in some companies, the Director of Operations. IT Managers are the head of the IT department and oversee day-to-day operations, so they report to the executives of a company. They are responsible for compiling and presenting reports regarding the IT budget, suggesting new and improved technologies to implement, and providing updates on cybersecurity.
