What does a System Engineer do?
System Engineers design complex systems in many industries, including aerospace, manufacturing, information technology, and computer hardware. For example, a System Engineer could design a highly integrated information system for a software company or work with an aerospace firm, improving inflight data recording technology.
System Engineer skills and qualifications
A successful System Engineer has a solid educational background combined with experience and relevant skills. They need to have strong interpersonal skills, as they often work within a team of other engineers and supporting professions. Being able to communicate effectively and listen and understand the client’s needs are crucial skills. Some other skills and qualifications of a System Engineer include:
- Strong understanding of engineering, electronics, electrical systems, and applied technologies
- Ability to effectively problem-solve and troubleshoot complex systems
- Practical project management skills and ability to lead and supervise a team
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex ideas and concepts
- Ability to prioritize tasks and goals
System Engineer experience requirements
A System Engineer gains most of their experience during on-the-job training. Because System Engineers work in such diverse industries, their experience requirements are specific to every company.
A successful System Engineer requires a solid understanding of complex systems, engineering principles, and applied technology. An entry-level System Engineer needs more than four years of relevant work experience.
System Engineer education and training requirements
Look for a candidate with a bachelor’s degree in computer, electrical, or electronic engineering, engineering physics, or computer science. One of these qualifications is required to practice as a System Engineer.
After graduation, a System Engineer can work for three to four years under supervision to gain valuable hands-on experience. Then, upon completing a professional practice exam, they can register to become a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.). This special designation allows the System Engineer to approve engineering drawings and reports and practice as a Professional Engineer. The Professional Engineer designation is recognized globally, but in Canada Engineers also need to register with their provincial or territorial regulatory body to work.
