Additionally, the Fleet Manager develops procedures for the handling of dangerous goods, hires new staff, manages the budget and acquisitions, and prepares reports for senior management. They are also responsible for negotiating with Carriers and Warehouse Operators to secure the lowest possible rates for the transportation company.

A successful Fleet Manager candidate typically has a bachelor’s degree in business administration, transportation administration, or engineering. Candidates may also have several years of on-the-job clerical experience in the industry as well as operational experience in freight traffic controlling. In some cases, a bachelor’s degree is not necessary if the candidate is a licensed Driver of the transport vehicle the company represents. For example, a commercial Pilot or Vessel Leader can also take on the Fleet Manager position as their knowledge and expertise in the field brings invaluable knowledge to the role.
