What does a Plumber do?
A Plumber manages and maintains all plumbing work within an establishment. They may work for private companies, residences, or large commercial buildings. They install, maintain, and repair drainage systems. Additionally, Plumbers are often required to install or repair plumbing systems that are either underground or within walls, and they also repair pipe connections to ensure that plumbing fixtures operate optimally. A Plumber is required to make sure all installations and repairs are compliant with government regulations.
Plumber skills and qualifications
A successful Plumber candidate will have many skills and qualifications that will be useful to the position. Here are some to look out for in a successful candidate:
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Good communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to work together as part of a team alongside other technicians (e.g. electricians, engineers)

Plumber experience requirements
A Plumber may not necessarily require experience beyond having a certification. If the Plumber is expected to manage a team of technicians, previous experience in a leadership position and at least five years of practice in being a plumber will be considered as a strong asset.
Plumber education and training requirements
A Plumber candidate needs a secondary school diploma, in addition to having a Plumbing certification. Applicants will have completed a four or five-year apprenticeship program to receive their trade certification. Each province has its own regulated governing body. If the job requires a Red Seal endorsement, the applicant who has completed the examination and passed it would have an advantage.
