What does a Systems Engineer do?

A Systems Engineer works in an organization with other Engineers to make sure computer systems work effectively within the business. Typically, a Systems Engineer manages installed systems and is responsible for fixing any problems that may arise. Fixing computer issues may include troubleshooting or reverse-engineering systems to solve the problem. A Systems Engineer may also prepare any documentation required for others to use the computer systems and perform basic troubleshooting. Additionally, a Systems Engineer may work with vendors to secure contracts and ensure their company gets a favourable deal. Sometimes, Systems Engineers need to travel between company campuses or offices.

Systems Engineer skills and qualifications

A successful Systems Engineer will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications required for the duties performed in this job, including:

  • Experience in monitoring, training, and teaching junior staff members or other Systems Engineers
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Experience working with or administering at least one cloud platform, such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical thinking skills

Systems Engineer experience requirements

Systems Engineer job applicants generally need five or more years of experience working in the IT field. Look for applicants who have previously worked with public cloud platforms like Google Cloud Platform. Candidates who have experience working with infrastructure management, application development, or analytics software are an asset. Candidates also need experience reviewing and executing test plans to further system developments. Systems Engineers who have worked in a design office environment and have hands-on field experience are often preferred.

Systems Engineer training and education

Applicants should have at least a bachelor’s degree with a specialization in computer engineering, electrical engineering, engineering physics, or a related discipline. Generally, a master’s degree or doctoral degree in an engineering-related discipline is preferred. Make sure to look for an applicant who has been licensed by an accredited engineering association, such as the Professional Engineers of Ontario. It is also important to look for an applicant with a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) certification.
