In order to be a successful Design Engineer, candidates will have specific skills and qualifications. Some of these may include:

  • In-depth knowledge of specialized software, such as computer-aided design (CAD) software
  • Software programming expertise in languages such as Python or MATLAB
  • Knowledge of the design and fabrication process
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Great problem-solving skills for determining solutions when issues arise

Design Engineer experience requirements

A Design Engineer will need to have previous experience to excel in their role. Resumes that demonstrate at least three or more years of experience in mechanical design or another relevant Engineer role will be highly sought after. Experience in an industry that is similar or the same as the organization would be considered an asset for the candidate. Many Design Engineers may have internship experience.

Design Engineer education and training requirements

At a minimum, a Design Engineer will have a bachelor’s degree in industrial design, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Some candidates with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering may apply to the role . Candidates will have their Professional Engineering (P.Eng) licence as a certification for practicing as an Engineer in Canada. Applicants may also have taken other coursework, whether online or through an accredited institution, that may be seen as valuable to their role.
