Child Care Workers provide children with a well-rounded support system or program that stimulates their intellectual, physical, and emotional growth. They plan and implement activities and lesson plans that are age-appropriate, with the child’s well-being in mind.

A Child Care Worker is vigilant in character and able to monitor children throughout the day, ensuring their safety at all times. Parents and teachers are able to rely on the Child Care Worker to maintain clear communication with them and act appropriately in case of an emergency.

The East Kootenay Inclusive Child Care Support program, under Community Connections Society of Southeast B.C., is seeking Inclusive Child Care Workers in Invermere, BC. This is an opportunity to work on an enthusiastic and supportive team, playing a significant role in enhancing the development of children and building a spirit of inclusion in the community. Inclusive Child Care Workers provide enhanced staffing support in community programs and are a collaborative team member to that program.

Qualifications:

The applicants will have their Early Childhood Education Certification, Early Childhood Education Assistant or Responsible Adult certificate. Experience working in the field of child care/early childhood development is preferred and accordingly, preference will be given to applicants who have training, skills and/or experience working with children with a range of developmental delays, disabilities and/or diverse challenges. Applicants with Education Assistant training and work experience will be considered. Applicants that have other experience working with children may also be considered.

Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment and be passionate about inclusion.

Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with young children and an awareness of developmentally appropriate practice.

Other Requirements

� Successful criminal record screening.

� Membership with BCGEU.

� Have transportation to go between different community programs.

    A Child Care Worker ensures that all aspects of a child’s welfare are met while under their supervision. Some common duties include:

    • Plan, lead, and guide activities throughout the day, such as reading, physical activity, and creative expression through art and song
    • Ensure that meals are prepared and distributed to all children
    • Provide guidance with safe hygiene practices
    • Monitor children throughout the day and ensure safety at all times
    • Provide guidance to assisting staff members

    Other opportunities for gaining experience in the field include tutoring young children in after-school programs. There are also various volunteer opportunities at government-run organizations and non-profit child care centres. Some places of worship need child care during their services, and rely on volunteers for help.

    Child Care Worker education and training requirements

    Child Care Workers typically need a bachelor’s degree in child development or have completed a two- to four-year college program in early childhood education. Some workplaces may require additional licensing depending on the level of the position being applied for. All Child Care Workers must have CPR and first aid training. At the bare minimum, a Child Care Worker is required to have a high school diploma or GED.
