Electrician duties and responsibilities

The duties of Electricians are diverse and depend on the employer’s requirements and specialties. Some Electricians are tasked to work on industrial electrical installations, such as wiring of transformers and installation of high-voltage transmission lines. Others are required to work on building electrical installation and miniature electrical projects. Some common responsibilities required for Electricians include:

  • Devising viable plans for electrical installations
  • Laying conduit in walls, temporary partitions, and other concealed areas

    Essential Functions AND Responsibilities
  • Prepare and clean up construction sites
  • Move materials and equipment and perform demolition, excavation and compaction activities
  • Handle and distribute construction materials (e.g. load and unload vehicles with supplies, equipment and construction materials; move tools, equipment and construction materials to and from work areas; remove rubble and other debris)
  • Excavate, backfill and compact subgrade (e.g. move and level earth using shovels and rakes, operate pneumatic tampers)
  • Place, consolidate and protect case-in-place concrete or masonry structures (e.g. shovel cement and other materials into cement mixers, mix, pour and spread concrete; use electric and pneumatic vibrators)
  • Assemble and dismantle scaffolding, ramps, catwalks, shoring and barricades at construction sites

    The Automotive Electrician will install, maintain and repair electrical wiring and computer-based equipment in motor vehicles.

    Primary Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics, and code;
  • Create vehicle electrical control boards as per vehicle work order;
  • Install all interior electronics and audio/visual systems such as: Android radio, surround cameras, alarm system, etc.;
  • Create wiring harness as per vehicle work order;
  • Troubleshoot any unforeseen issues that arise;

    Qualifications

    As a technician, familiarity and hands-on experience with different tools and equipment are required. The ability to work with the different tools is also essential, so an electrician should be familiar with, and have some years of experience working with, these tools. Electricians are required to be creative and think critically, so they should have some experience as innovators.

    Electrician education and training requirements

    Like many other technicians, Electricians must generally also have a minimum of a high school diploma, GED, or its equivalents. Apart from being a standard for hiring, the minimum educational requirement is also required to gauge the candidate’s communication skills. They are required to also have completed a four- to five-year apprenticeship program and pass the final trade exam. To work on many projects, electricians must be certified by a regulatory body. In Alberta, for example, electricians must have a certification from the Apprenticeship and Industry Training Office before being allowed to work on electrical projects and sites.
