Maintenance Assistants perform various tasks to maintain a building. Some of their primary duties and responsibilities include:

Maintenance Assistant candidates need general maintenance experience to perform the duties and responsibilities of the role. Candidates should have at least two years experience as a Maintenance Assistant or in a similar role. They must be familiar with how cleaning machines, moving equipment, and power tools work and understand how to use them for maintenance. They must also be familiar with sourcing parts and services for repair and maintenance work.

Experience with mechanical, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing systems is a plus for candidates. While Maintenance Assistant candidates can get experience from paid jobs and internships, volunteer experience is also suitable. If the Maintenance Assistant will manage other Maintenance Assistants and Technicians, candidates must have previous experience in a leadership role.

Maintenance Assistant education and training requirements

Maintenance Assistant candidates need to have a high school diploma or GED. Ideal candidates will have certifications in building maintenance and facilities management from accredited institutions. If your facility has specialist equipment or requirements, such as a refrigerated facility or healthcare facility, then the Maintenance Assistant candidate will need relevant training in maintaining that type of building.
