  • A certain amount of training as a paraprofessional
  • Various skills they gained that may assist them as a paraprofessional

How will you ensure students stay focused and motivated in class?

This question gives you more insight into the candidate's ability to work with young students. It tells you of the candidate's experience as a paraprofessional. The ideal candidate can develop alternative ways to keep students motivated in class constantly. A favourable answer demonstrates:

  • Observation skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Innovative ideas that help the students stay focussed
Example:

"I'd use rhymes and songs to teach them different concepts in class. I'd also reward them for performing well on tests. Whenever a student answers any question correctly, I'd encourage the class to applaud them and congratulate them. If a student struggles with class material, I would encourage them to keep trying."

Which methods have you used in the past to assist students with special needs?

If the candidate may work with special needs students, this question lets you know how they might work with them. It also helps you see if they're comfortable assisting them. A satisfactory response includes:

  • Their comfort level in dealing with these students

It's a paraprofessional's duty to monitor students in the classroom. Students who are distracted in class and may need guidance on how to focus throughout the lesson. This question lets you know how patient the candidate is when dealing with disruptive students. An excellent answer shows:

  • An ability to be firm when dealing with the student
  • Composure when dealing with the disruptive student
  • The ability to use the incident as a learning experience

What are the limitations of your duties compared to those of a teacher?

This question makes you aware of the candidate's ability to distinguish their responsibilities from those of a teacher. An ideal candidate should demonstrate that they understand how their responsibilities vary from that of the teacher. A good answer includes:

  • At least one limitation
  • Acknowledgement of the two different roles 
  • Acceptance of the teacher's authority

“A teacher develops lesson plans and curriculum. I provide the teaching materials and give recommendations to the teacher on certain decisions. I understand we have to work together and I respect their authority.”

This question gives you more insight into the candidate's weaknesses. It's important to understand what the candidate finds difficult about the job and gauge whether they would be a good fit for your institution. What to look for in an answer:

  • Willingness to improve on their weaknesses

This question assesses the candidate's understanding of confidentiality compliance and ensuring documents belonging to the school remain private. A paraprofessional may have to keep documents belonging to students and teachers private. A suitable response contains:

  • A clear understanding of confidentiality
  • Assurances they will comply
  • Reasons they need to comply with privacy rules

“Confidentiality compliance involves ensuring all school documents remain private. I never divulge information concerning anyone on school grounds. Confidentiality compliance is one of my fundamental principles and I'll adhere strictly to it.”

How do you react to a child getting hurt when under your supervision on the playground?

This question gives you insight into the candidate's ability to deal with emergencies. A paraprofessional may need to handle emergency situations on the playground calmly. A good answer shows:

  • Confidence when handling emergency situations
  • An ability to handle emergencies calmly
  • A straightforward procedure in which they will deal with the situation
Example:

“I'd check on the hurt student and monitor their condition. If they're injured, I'd take them to the school nurse and stay with them until we have attended to them. Thereafter, I'd inform their parents of what happened and write an incident report to ensure it was documented."
