15 Copywriter Interview Questions and Answers

How do you write search engine optimized content?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's knowledge of industry terms and experience with search engine optimization (SEO). What to look for in an answer:

  • In-depth understanding of SEO
  • Experience researching and writing SEO content
  • Similar SEO process to yours

Example:

"When writing SEO content, I start by researching popular keywords and search terms to use in my writing. I will then read other top-ranking articles of similar topics to see what competitors' articles are like and why they're successful. I then write my content using the keywords and run it through SEO platforms, such as Yoast SEO, to ensure it's optimized."

What do you do to ensure you meet your deadlines?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's time management skills and ability to adhere to deadlines. What to look for in an answer:

  • Strong time management
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Experience in a similar role

Example:

"To ensure I meet my deadlines, I input them all in a calendar that I refer to every day. I prioritize projects that I know will take me a long time or are due sooner to ensure I do everything on time. I also use my calendar to create a weekly to-do list with the highest priority projects on the top."

Are you comfortable writing in someone else's voice?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's experience and comfort with ghostwriting and adapting their writing style. What to look for in an answer:

  • Experience in a similar role
  • Ability to adapt their writing style
  • Willingness to ghostwrite if necessary

Example:

"I have been ghostwriting for an agency for over five years. Businesses approach the agency with a project, and I write whatever that business needs in their voice. As the agency works with multiple businesses, I constantly need to adapt my writing style to different needs and voices, which I am comfortable with."

What types of content do you have experience writing?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's experience and determine if it fits your needs. What to look for in an answer:

  • Experience copywriting
  • Willingness to write different types of copy
  • Understanding of the role and your needs

Example:

"As I have been copywriting for over ten years, I have experience writing a variety of types of content. My niche is writing marketing copy for technology companies, so that is where most of my experience lies. But I also have experience writing magazine articles, blog posts for the travel and health and beauty industry, instruction manuals, and even non-fiction books."

Can you walk us through your pre-writing process?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's pre-writing process and see if it suits your company. What to look for in an answer:

  • Established copywriting process
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to understand the company's voice

Example:

"Before I start writing, I will research the company I am writing for so I can understand their voice. This allows me to write in a way that is natural to them. I will then research the company's competitors and competing articles on the same topic. This gives me a better idea of what type of content is already out there. It also allows me to start my keyword research to determine what keywords I will include in my writing to make it rank better in search engines."

How do you ensure a copywriting campaign will be successful?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's knowledge of successful marketing campaigns and their role in contributing to that success. What to look for in an answer:

  • Knowledge of what makes a successful campaign
  • Understanding of their role in a marketing campaign
  • Willingness to create effective and successful copy

Example:

"To ensure my copy has the best chance of success in a marketing campaign, I do a lot of research beforehand, even if I'm familiar with the content. When I'm done writing, I double- and triple-check everything from grammar to flow to style, ensuring everything looks good together."

Have you ever missed a deadline? What happened?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's ability to admit to mistakes and learn from them. What to look for in an answer:

  • Experience working with deadlines
  • Honesty when admitting their mistakes
  • Ability to learn from mistakes

Example:

"I have missed one deadline in the past. I mixed up my dates and thought a project was due the following week when it wasn't, so I hadn't started working on it yet. I only realized when I was out of town on a camping trip and I got a calendar notification about the project. I had no internet, so I couldn't contact my client until I got back. I apologized, offered him a discount, and got the copy to him the next day. Going forward, I always checked my calendar daily to ensure I was meeting all of my deadlines."

How do you prioritize your work?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's ability to prioritize projects. What to look for in an answer:

  • Ability to multi-task
  • Understanding of when one task is more of a priority than another
  • Experience working on multiple projects at once

Example:

"I prioritize my work based on two factors: when it's due and how long it will take me to complete. Projects that will take me a few days compared to a few hours are usually my top priority. I want to give myself as much time as possible to complete the work. At the same time, I also consider deadlines. If one project is due the next day and another is due the week after, I'll complete the one due tomorrow first."

What credentials do you have that make you a good Copywriter?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's background to determine if they're a good fit for your team or if they might need further training. What to look for in an answer:

  • Strong writing portfolio
  • Bachelor's degree in English or a related field
  • Copywriting training or a willingness to obtain it

Example:

"I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto. I majored in English and linguistics, with a minor in book and media studies. I used my degree to get a copywriting role with an agency and have been with them for over three years."

What do you like about our current content? What would you change?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's knowledge of your company to ensure they're prepared for the interview and care about your company. What to look for in an answer:

  • Prior knowledge of your content and company
  • Ability to be honest when suggesting content changes
  • Strong ideas for improving your work

Example:

"I think your current content is really well-written, but I think it's only reaching a limited audience. This is because it doesn't seem to be optimized for search engines. To update your current content, I would do some keyword research and include relevant keywords throughout your articles. I would also change the style to include headers, bullet points, and pictures, as your current articles are quite text-heavy and hard to read quickly."

How do you handle negative feedback?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's ability to receive negative feedback and learn from it. What to look for in an answer:

  • Ability to handle negative feedback professionally
  • Experience receiving negative or positive feedback
  • Able to apply the feedback to their future work

Example:

"I see negative feedback as a learning experience. I listen to client feedback to see what changes I need to make to improve my future writing. If it's stylistic feedback, I ensure I always apply those changes to any new work I do for that client. If the feedback is about my grammar or ability to write, I do further research on the concepts to apply them to all of my work."

How would you describe your writing style?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's writing style to ensure they'd be a good fit for your company. What to look for in an answer:

  • Established writing style
  • Ability to adapt to different writing styles when necessary
  • Experience in a similar role

Example:

"I would say my writing style is constantly changing to meet clients' needs. If one client wants a research-heavy, technical piece of copy, I can do it. If another client wants a fun, lighthearted article, I can do that as well. After ten years of copywriting, I can adapt to any style. However, when writing copy for my own website, I would say my writing style is relatable and lighthearted, but well-researched."

Have you ever made a mistake on a project and not realized it before submitting it? What happened?

The aim of this question is to assess the candidate's ability to admit their mistakes and learn from them. What to look for in an answer:

  • Experience in a similar role
  • Ability to admit their mistakes
  • Willingness to learn from their mistakes to prevent them in the future

Example:

"I made a mistake once when I was writing similar copy for two different clients. I accidentally included a paragraph that was meant for one article in the other article. The client didn't realize either as the topic was so similar, but I noticed when I was reading the article on his website. As soon as I realized it, I e-mailed the client with an updated article. In the future, if I had two projects to work on at the same time, I closed all the documents and webpages I used between projects."

What is your favourite piece of writing in your portfolio and why?

The aim of this question is to ensure the candidate has a portfolio and assess it. What to look for in an answer:

  • Experience with copywriting
  • Passion for their work

Example:

"When I first started writing for a small business, they had little organic traffic to their website. After writing SEO content for three months, I was able to increase traffic to their website by 300% with no additional marketing."
