What do you think are the essential qualities of a good Driver?

The question tests the candidate's awareness of the role and also assesses their honesty. It will allow you to evaluate whether the candidate is capable of thinking quickly and critically.

What to look for in an answer:

Do you think that as a Driver you need to be healthy and physically fit to perform your duty?

You want your drivers to always attend to their duties appropriately without any incapacity. You also want a driver who can perform physical activities such as delivering a package or changing tires.

What to look for in an answer:

  • Candidates attitude towards physical activities
  • Candidates understanding of their role
  • Candidates opinion about physical wellness

Example:

"Yes, a driver should be physically fit and agile to perform their duties. I do a lot of exercise to maintain my physical and mental fitness, which has helped me overcome several physical challenges in my job."

What would be your first reaction if you were involved in an accident?

The answer to this question determines if the candidate has learned basic road safety and emergency response practices. You want to hire a driver who will make quick and legal decisions during an accident.

What to look for in an answer:

  • Familiarity with the scene of accident procedure
  • Ability to perform such activities as first aid
  • Past experience in an accident situation

"The first action I took when I was involved in a minor accident in Ontario is to notify my supervisor. Do you consider your driving record as reputable?

Since you want a competent driver with a clean record, the candidate should demonstrate their confidence when answering this question.

What to look for in an answer:

  • Honesty from the candidate
  • Evidence to past experience reputable actions

Example:

"Five years ago I was pulled over for exceeding a speed limit in Ontario and I was fined $40. I was rushing to the airport to pick my boss. I learned to take speed limit indicators more seriously and I've also improved in my time management."

While driving for us, you might work for long hours. How will maintain your focus?

The candidate should indicate the number of hours they can work without losing focus. Driving for long hours without resting can be dangerous and some drivers are not comfortable exceeding their usual driving hours.

What to look for in an answer:

  • Candidate indicate hours they can comfortably work
  • Attention to driving safety and fatigue
  • Attitude to the job

"I have established a routine of working no more than 14 hours without rest. However, when I have to meet an urgent deadline and work beyond the hours, I take my job seriously and I can do what it takes to meet the company's needs."

Are you comfortable working weekends and holidays?

It is very important to know if the driver you will be hiring can avail themselves on a holiday or weekends. The driver should express their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the proposal.

What to look for in an answer:

  • Sacrifices for the company
  • Positive attitude while answering
  • Reliability

Example:

"I have been working on weekends and holidays whenever my employer requested in all my previous engagements. Apart from emergencies, I prefer to be notified about working on the weekend or holidays so that I can plan ahead. I love working on holidays because there is limited traffic in the city."

While driving in Ontario on Monday afternoon, which is the suitable route to use from the West to Ottawa?

The candidate should demonstrate their mastery of the most common and shortest routes in the region. The question also tests the candidate's ability to research traffic situations in different routes at specific times. Your driver should always choose routes that save time and minimize costs.

What to look for in an answer:

  • Prowess in traffic prediction
  • Logical reasoning
  • Ability to make a critical decision
