The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Disability Management Advisor to join our Health, Safety, Environment, and Risk Team in St. John’s, NL.
The role is a permanent position, working a Monday to Friday schedule from the St. John’s Office. Travel to Long Harbour and Voisey’s Bay will be on a as-needed basis.
As a Disability Management Advisor, you will manage cases related to employees who are missing or performing modified work duties due to a health issue. Your experience and skills will allow you to ensure appropriate classification and reporting (internal and external) of injuries. You’ll promote the health and wellness within the Vale Newfoundland and Labrador Operations by interacting directly with site personnel and advising on health and wellness programs such as mental health, fatigue, medicals & medical surveillance, disability management, worker’s compensation and Drug & Alcohol Program administration.
Additionally, in this position you will:
- Champion health, wellness, and disability management as part of daily business operations, ensuring medical leaves of absence, accommodations, and claims are managed in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
- Act as Claims Administrator by maintaining case files and records for disability, accommodation, occupational injury, and alcohol and drug cases; coordinate appointments and travel with departments, manage site access clearances, and support employee compliance activities.
- Lead the development, administration, and continuous improvement of VNL’s Disability Management and Return-to-Work programs, including overseeing Drug and Alcohol Program service providers and ensuring legislative compliance.
- Develop and deliver training on disability management, workers’ compensation, return-to-work programs, alcohol and drug case management, and supervisor responsibilities.
- Manage workers’ compensation cases, maintain relationships with WorkplaceNL and healthcare providers.
- Conduct regular internal compliance audits and support external audits, including PRIME, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and TSM.
- Oversee compliance monitoring across health, medical surveillance, alcohol and drug, and site access systems, while administering and maintaining programs such as Cority, SAP IM, Connect, and related corporate databases.
- Partner closely with site HSER teams, Human Resources, medical service providers, and operational leaders to support employee health, wellness, and workplace risk management initiatives.
- Analyze health, disability, mental health, and fatigue management trends to identify risks, recommend improvements, and support the development of proactive health and wellness programs across VNL sites.

About You
Education:
- A minimum of a college diploma in a relevant field is required.
- Certificate in Occupational Health, Wellness, Disability Management, or other general Health Profession is as asset (ex: CRSP, CDMP).
Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years experience in a similar position is required.
Skills:
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience in injury and disability management, as well as provide technical expertise and consultative services to management.
- Possess a strong work ethic with effective problem-solving, communication (listening, oral and written), decision making and analytical skills.
- Be an effective team player who excels at building trusting relationships with clients and coworkers but also able to work independently.
- Possess knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations in the occupational health and safety and human resources fields is required.
- Excellent computer skills – Word, Excel & Power Point, Adobe.
- Be familiar with SAP IM & SuccessFactors, ADP, and Cority Systems.
- Provide effective wellness sessions.
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to achieve goals related to program.
- Support strategic priorities that relate to health, wellness and disability management.
