Join Our Growing Team

BDS is growing and expanding, with upcoming heavy haul projects creating opportunities for experienced Pilot Truck Drivers to join our team.

Based in Acheson, Alberta, BDS provides heavy haul and specialized transportation services across Canada and the United States. We are looking for dependable, safety-focused individuals who take pride in supporting the safe movement of oversized loads.

The Position

As a Pilot Truck Driver, you will work closely with heavy haul drivers, dispatch, and project personnel to escort oversized loads, monitor road conditions and clearances, and help coordinate safe movements.

Trailer steering experience and completion of U.S. pilot/escort training, such as the Washington State course, are assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate a pilot truck in lead or chase positions during oversized load movements.
  • Maintain clear radio communication with drivers, other escorts, and support crews.
  • Identify and communicate hazards, including overhead restrictions, narrow roads, tight turns, and changing traffic conditions.
  • Review routes, permit conditions, and movement instructions with the transportation team.
  • Participate in pre-trip planning, safety meetings, and hazard assessments.
  • Inspect the pilot truck and escort equipment before each trip.
  • Complete required logs, inspections, and company paperwork.
  • Assist with trailer steering duties where qualified and assigned.
  • Represent BDS professionally when dealing with customers, road users, and site personnel.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s licence and acceptable driver’s abstract.
  • Previous pilot truck or oversized load escort experience preferred.
  • Trailer steering experience, particularly with multi-axle or perimeter frame trailers, is an asset.
  • Completion of U.S. pilot/escort vehicle operator training, such as the Washington State certification course, is an asset.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence using two-way radios.
  • Ability to follow route plans, permit conditions, and safety procedures.
  • Willingness to travel, work flexible hours, and stay out of town for project work.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a coordinated heavy haul team.
  • Additional pilot/escort certifications and current safety tickets are assets.
