From grant writing and manuscript development to CME programs, publications planning, slide decks, scientific content development, and meeting reports, we help researchers, healthcare professionals, and life sciences organizations communicate complex science with clarity, accuracy, and impact.
Position Summary
The Account Manager, Medical Communications is responsible for managing and growing key client relationships across the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, academic, and medical communications sectors. The successful candidate will act as a trusted advisor to clients, identifying opportunities to expand services, ensuring project excellence, and collaborating with medical writers and scientific teams to deliver high-quality communications solutions.
This role requires an individual who is relationship-driven, commercially minded, and experienced in medical communications, healthcare, pharmaceutical sales, or life sciences business development. The ideal candidate combines strong account management capabilities with the ability to identify new business opportunities and contribute to overall revenue growth.
Key Responsibilities
Account Management & Client Relationship Development
- Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned client accounts.
- Develop and maintain strong, long-term relationships with pharmaceutical, biotech, healthcare, academic, and non-profit clients.
- Build trusted advisor relationships with stakeholders in medical affairs, clinical development, publications, commercial, market access, regulatory, and scientific communications teams.
- Conduct regular client meetings to understand evolving business priorities, upcoming publication needs, congress plans, education initiatives, and scientific communication objectives.
- Ensure high levels of client satisfaction through proactive communication, responsiveness, and service excellence.
- Manage contract renewals, ongoing service agreements, and repeat project opportunities.
- Monitor account performance, client feedback, scope changes, and opportunities to strengthen client partnerships.
Revenue Growth & Business Development
- Identify and pursue opportunities to expand existing client accounts through cross-selling and upselling of medical writing, publications, CME/CPD, slide deck, meeting report, and scientific content services.
- Generate new business opportunities through networking, referrals, industry associations, conferences, LinkedIn outreach, and targeted prospecting.
- Develop strategic account plans to support revenue growth, retention, and new service adoption.
- Build and manage a robust sales pipeline and maintain accurate activity tracking within CRM systems.
- Prepare and coordinate proposals, scopes of work, service agreements, project estimates, and client-facing presentations.
- Collaborate with leadership on pricing strategy, sales strategy, market expansion, partnership development, and revenue forecasting.
- Support new client onboarding and ensure a smooth transition from sales discussions to active project delivery.
Medical Communications Project Oversight
- Partner with medical writers, editors, publication specialists, and scientific consultants to ensure successful project delivery.
- Coordinate client requests and facilitate timely communication between clients and internal teams.
- Monitor project timelines, budgets, deliverables, client approvals, and resource requirements.
- Assist with scope development, project planning, kick-off meetings, and client status updates for new initiatives.
- Support quality assurance processes, client review cycles, version control, and timely resolution of feedback.
- Flag project risks, scope creep, capacity concerns, and client issues to leadership early and professionally.
Industry & Market Engagement
- Stay informed on developments within pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical affairs, healthcare communications, scientific publishing, and congress activity.
- Attend industry conferences, congresses, networking events, and client meetings to represent the organization and generate qualified opportunities.
- Develop knowledge of competitor offerings, market trends, client pain points, and emerging scientific communication needs.
- Contribute to pitch decks, capabilities presentations, case studies, client proposals, and thought leadership initiatives.
Strategic Partnership Development
- Identify and establish partnerships with healthcare organizations, academic institutions, professional associations, research organizations, and industry stakeholders.
- Support strategic initiatives aimed at increasing organizational visibility, referral channels, and market presence.
- Collaborate with leadership to explore new service offerings based on client demand and market opportunities.
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of experience in account management, business development, healthcare sales, pharmaceutical sales, medical communications, or a related client-facing field.
- Demonstrated success managing client relationships, growing accounts, and contributing to revenue targets.
- Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, academic, or life sciences ecosystem.
- Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
- Experience working with multiple stakeholders in a consultative, client-facing role.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a remote environment.
- Experience using CRM platforms and sales pipeline management tools.
- Bachelor's degree required.
Preferred
- Experience within a medical communications agency, medical writing company, scientific publishing organization, CRO, pharmaceutical company, or healthcare communications environment.
- Knowledge of medical affairs, scientific publications, CME/CPD programs, congress activities, healthcare professional engagement, and scientific content development.
- Advanced degree in life sciences, healthcare, medicine, pharmacy, or a related discipline.
- Existing network within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, academic research, or medical affairs organizations.
