We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to join our growing team in Bruce County, Ontario.
Position Overview
As the resident Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), you will serve as the site’s primary radiation protection authority and safety champion. You will be responsible for overseeing the Radiation Protection (RP) Program and ensuring compliance with Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulations, license requirements, and industry best practices.
This role is critical in protecting workers, the public, and the environment while supporting safe and efficient nuclear decontamination and material processing operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the day-to-day implementation and continuous improvement of the site Radiation Protection (RP) Program in accordance with CNSC license requirements, ALARA principles, contamination control standards, and internal procedures.
- Perform radiological safety assessments and support work planning activities through the development and review of Radiological Exposure Permits (REPs), job coverage requirements, exposure controls, and pre-job briefings.
- Provide field-level radiation protection leadership and technical guidance to workers and supervisors during routine and non-routine radiological work activities.
- Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe radiological conditions or non-compliant activities are identified and ensure corrective actions are implemented prior to work resumption.
- Administer and oversee personnel dosimetry programs, including dose tracking, investigation of abnormal results, trend analysis, and reporting.
- Conduct dose assessments and review dose models for planned work activities; recommend shielding, work sequencing, and engineering controls to maintain exposures ALARA.
- Develop, revise, and maintain RP procedures, work instructions, training materials, and radiological safety documentation.
- Deliver radiation protection training, coaching, and awareness sessions to staff and contractors.
- Coordinate radiological monitoring activities, including contamination surveys, airborne monitoring programs, sampling plans, and instrument deployment.
- Perform compliance inspections, audits, and performance monitoring activities; identify gaps and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Support radiological event response activities, investigations, material accountability, and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Act as the primary point of contact for radiation protection matters with internal stakeholders, clients, and regulatory agencies, including CNSC representatives.
- Support licensing activities, inspections, audits, and regulatory communications as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Sciences, or a related technical discipline.
- Master’s degree considered an asset.
- Formal Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) training and relevant certifications required.
Experience
- Minimum 5+ years of progressive radiation protection or health physics experience within nuclear, decommissioning, remediation, research, or licensed industrial environments.
- Strong hands-on experience performing radiological surveys, contamination control, and job coverage activities.
- Demonstrated experience supporting radiological event response, investigations, and corrective action implementation.
- Experience performing dose assessments, reviewing dose models, and implementing ALARA improvements.
- Proven experience working directly with the CNSC and supporting regulatory inspections, audits, and licence-driven reporting.
- Experience overseeing decontamination activities and material free-release verification is considered a strong asset.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of radiation physics, contamination control principles, and ALARA methodologies.
- Thorough understanding of CNSC regulatory requirements, RP program administration, and nuclear licence compliance.
- Proficiency with radiation detection instrumentation, survey techniques, and radiological monitoring equipment.
- Knowledge of airborne radioactivity monitoring concepts and implementation.
- Strong technical writing, reporting, and data trending capabilities.
Soft Skills
- Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring abilities.
- Confident decision-maker with a proactive safety mindset.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Team-oriented with the ability to work effectively across multiple departments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; French considered an asset.
