Within the context of a client service culture and in accordance with established standards of professional practice, and the established mission, vision, values, objectives and policies of BC Cancer, performs Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) imaging and related technical and patient care duties within the Regional Functional Imaging department. Duties include performing various PET/CT procedures including scanning and image processing for patients of all ages, performing patient radiotracer injections, performing general patient care duties such as taking vital signs, starting IV lines and checking blood glucose levels, participating in system management pertaining to the digital imaging storage and distribution network within assigned area, helping to maintain and organize various procedural documents, helping to monitor equipment performance by reporting any operating deficiencies, performing routine equipment quality control procedures and performing other technical functions as required in a highly detail-oriented department. Duties/Accountabilities: 1. Performs all aspects of clinical PET/CT scanning including selecting the appropriate imaging protocol, positioning the patient for the scan, performing image acquisition and data reconstruction, and presenting the final image data set to the PET physician for interpretation. 2. Prepares the patient for actual scanning procedure by explaining the entire procedure to the patient, answering any pertinent questions from the patient, and obtaining informed consent from the patient prior to starting. 3. Performs technical work through duties such as correlating clinical history with examination to be performed, taking and recording baseline vital signs, establishing venous access for radiotracer injection, checking and recording blood glucose levels prior to injecting radiotracer, and administering the appropriate radiotracer. 4. Monitors patient safety during procedures by methods such as obtaining blood pressure readings and directly observing patients for any physical signs of distress. Responds to emergent situations in accordance with facility policies and procedures; may be required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the event of an emergency. 5. Operates PET and associated CT computers and equipment as needed in accordance with established standards and procedures. 6. Consults with the Lead PET Technologist, PET physician, and/or other appropriate team members in regards to any technical difficulties and/or concerns which may arise during any part of the patient’s procedure. 7. Monitors equipment performance and troubleshoots technical and equipment problems by methods such as checking equipment for accuracy, identifying source of problems, reporting malfunctions to appropriate personnel for repair, maintenance or replacement, maintaining records of service, participating in meetings with trade representatives to provide feedback and obtaining information on new updates. 8. Adheres to the quality control schedule for all departmental equipment by, for example, maintaining camera calibration in accordance with established procedures and performing routine QC checks. Maintains records and archival of camera and related equipment calibrations and QC checks and participates in quality review meetings. 9. Participates in departmental staff meetings regarding clinical processes, policies, protocols and procedures with professional and technical staff, makes recommendations for new and/or improved processes, and provides input towards changes to policies, procedures, or protocols to ensure that services are provided in the most efficient and effective way. 10. Participates in information management by inputting patient information into facility information system and organizing and filing appropriate patient procedural documents such as signed consent forms and medical questionnaires. 11. Implements new systems, procedures, and protocols as approved and directed by department leaders. 12. Adheres to system management procedures pertaining to the digital image storage and distribution network within the assigned area by archiving appropriate data and distributing appropriate image data in accordance with facility policies and procedures. 13. Participates in various research activities by following established protocols and procedures in conjunction with a research team as required. 14. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education, Training and Experience • Certification with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) in Nuclear Medicine. • Three years of recent experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. • Completion of formal PET/CT education such as the CAMRT PET/CT certificate program or the equivalence of training and/or experience. Skills and Abilities • Broad knowledge of theory and practice of Nuclear Medicine procedures, radiopharmacy dispensing, and radiation safety. • Basic knowledge of PET/CT cameras and related computer applications. • Basic knowledge of research processes and methodology. • Demonstrated high level of patient care skills for patients of all ages. • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment and clinical information systems. • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others in a highly detail-oriented department. • Demonstrated ability to learn new techniques and apply them to everyday practice. • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job. • Demonstrated skills in CPR techniques.
