We are seeking 2 casual status compassionate and dedicated Life Coaches (Home and Community Support Workers) to join a small care team.

The Life Coach role involves working directly with the young adult with medical, cognitive, and emotional/behavioural challenges within their private condo and community. The primary focus is to support development of essential life skills for increased independence and personal growth. The Life Coach also provides essential supervision and medical care support.

The ideal candidate will have work experience as a care provider supporting disabled people, excellent communication skills and a genuine desire to make a positive impact. While the Life Coach works with the young adult independently, they also work in collaboration with the Program Manager(s), the rest of the care team, the family, health care providers, therapists and other community partners.

This position offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the young adult’s wellbeing and quality of life while gaining valuable experience in supporting an individual with diverse complex needs.

Responsibilities:

What does the job entail? You would:

· create an effective therapeutic relationship with the young adult, using effective communication techniques tailored to their needs that promote understanding and engagement

· plan and execute daily activities in collaboration with the young person, for the various established time blocks in the schedule

· teach home-based life skills and support the young adult’s daily participation (i.e. to complete their personal hygiene, do home exercise, prepare meals, do laundry, perform light housekeeping tasks, organize the home, engage in free choice time activities such art/crafting projects, screen time, etc.)

· teach community-based skills and/or support the young adult’s participation in meaningful daily community-based activities/outing(s) (i.e. to exercise, shop, run errands, bank, engage in recreational, community events and social activities, etc.)

· support the young adult to participate in online and in-person learning to develop literacy skills, money management skills, hobby skills, employment skills, etc.

· plan and execute social opportunities to support the young adult to develop social skills (e.g., greet others, contact others, meet with others for activities, reciprocally communicate with others, apologize when needed, etc.) for the development of healthy, meaningful relationships

· support the young adult to successfully participate in volunteer work and eventually in paid work if possible

· employ approaches and responses to best support the young adult’s emotional and behavioural stability and support them to use emotional self-regulation skills and behave in socially acceptable ways

· foster a supportive environment that encourages the young adult to express their needs and preferences, supports them to make effective decisions if possible and/or maintains boundaries

· monitor the young adult’s medical conditions, administer regular and as needed medications as prescribed following protocols and documentation procedures and report all medical changes

· support the young adult to attend medical and therapy appointments

· document client challenges, progress and achievements, regularly and accurately

· complete assigned administrative, housekeeping and house management tasks to maintain an efficient, clean, organized and safe environment

· Note: You would sleep at night, but rarely would be required to wake and provide care to the young adult as needed

Qualifications:

• Two years' experience working with disabled individuals in home or community settings is required*
• A background of working in or an interest in pursing work in nursing, medicine, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, kinesiology, rehabilitation assistance, psychology, counselling, behaviour intervention support, mental health support, life skills development support, social skills development support, education assistance, early childhood education or teaching would be advantageous but is not mandatory*
• Fully proficiency with spoken and written English language is required
• Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to build rapport, and the ability to flex in approaches and responses for better outcomes is required
• Experience working with individuals with complex (multi-domain) challenges and/or brain injury would be advantageous but is not mandatory
• Excellent organization skills and high attention to detail is required
• A genuine passion for helping others improve their quality of life through skill development is required

*This position is ideal for those already committed to working in the support worker field and/or for students pursuing work experience for their prospective Bachelor's degree or Master's degree (graduate studies) in the above listed fields.

Note: Initial and ongoing extensive training to meet the young adult’s specific needs will be provided.

Certifications:

· Standard First Aid and CPR C certification is required. (Can be obtained after hiring.)

· MANDT System and/or Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) certification is required. (Can be obtained after hiring.)

· A criminal record check (CRC) by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General to allow work with vulnerable adults is required. (This will need to be obtained specifically for PRESS after hiring.)

· A driver's license and acceptable driver's abstract (e.g. printed from ICBC or another insurer) are required.

Wages:

· Wages are paid on a per 24-hour day salary basis. (They are prorated for any partial shifts under 24 hours.)

· Each 24-hour shift is paid $636

Hours:

· The shifts run from 8 pm to 8 pm for each 24-hour shift.

Schedule:

· Casual work normally involves 1 – 24-hour shift. On an occasional basis, consecutive 24 hour shifts (i.e. 2 or more shifts) may be offered.

· These positions are ideal for those who have other part-time or flexible employment or who want significant days off to pursue other personal interests and/or study
