Full job description
Overview
Reporting to the Captains and Ferry Manager, and working closely with the Integrated Technical Services Team, the Marine Engineer is a vital part of the Toronto Port Authority ferry crew. Supporting year-round essential ferry services to Toronto’s Billy Bishop City Airport, the Marine Engineer is tasked with providing the highest maintenance standard to the Port Authorities’ two 30 m passenger RORO ferries as well as a small fleet of work boats operating in Toronto Harbour.
Responsibilities
General activities and functions include, but are not limited to:
- Serving as the lead engineer responsible for the efficient operation and maintenance of the ferries David Hornell and the electrically powered Marylin Bell serving Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport.
- Conducts regular inspections and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical systems on board, including engines, generators, pumps, HVAC systems, hydraulic systems, navigation and control systems.
- Responsible for maintaining the highest standard of cleanliness and organization of the engine room and machinery spaces.
- Completes vessel’s daily startup routine.
- Completes systems checklists and inspections in accordance with the vessels’ Safety Management System (SMS).
- Maintains database of critical vessel spares and equipment.
- Plans and schedules regular maintenance of shipboard equipment per OEM recommendations.
- Records vessel deficiencies and repairs using company digital management system.
- Troubleshoots and corrects vessel malfunctions.
- Routinely consults with management, captains, mates and Integrated Technical Services department regarding vessel maintenance.
- Reports all equipment malfunctions, and/or incidents involving passengers or crew to the on-duty Captain.
- Supervises vessel bunkering.
- Routinely takes part in vessel emergency drills and exercises.
- Follows Toronto Port Authority safety protocols, SOPs, guidelines and HS&E directives.
- Directly supervises and collaborates with contractors and staff in carrying out maintenance activities.
- Assist with the development of long-term maintenance plans including drydockings and major projects.
- Attendance on the vessel during drydockings.
- May occasionally perform the duties of a Deckhand Engineer which include assisting in ferry docking, vehicle stowage, and other duties as assigned by the captain in a safe and efficient manner.
- Other duties as assigned by the Toronto Port Authority.
Qualifications and Abilities
- Legal status to work in Canada.
- Minimum 3rd Class Marine Engineer, issued by Transport Canada.
- Possess minimum MED certificates as required for 3rd Class Engineer.
- Must possess a current Marine Advanced First Aid Certificate or obtain one within three months.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Transport Canada issued Marine Medical Certificate.
- Valid Class “G” Drivers License.
- 2 years minimum experience as 3rd class engineer on ferries, tugs, or similar vessels or combination of education and related experience.
- Experience scheduling and executing preventative maintenance programs.
- Competent with Microsoft 365 software suite.
- Must be able to overhaul & maintain vessel machinery.
- Must be in good physical condition, able to move and lift up to 50lbs.
- Must be able to interact with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
- Must have good command of English, including reading, writing, and speaking clearly so listeners can understand and recognize, and understand the speech of another person.
- Must be able to swim, and tread water for 2 minutes.
Conditions
- Criminal record check will be conducted on hire.
- Annual driver’s license validity check, as applicable.
- Flexibility to work occasional extended hours and/or various shifts or weekends as dictated by business needs.
- Maintain valid marine engineering credentials and marine medical certification.
- Active response to email and/or phone after-hours may be required.
Pay: $46.50 per hour
