Legal Assistant – Wills/Estates/Trusts and Corporate Law

Position Overview:

As a legal assistant you will support our lawyers in the areas of Corporate/Commercial and Wills/Estates/Trusts. You will be responsible for handling various administrative and clerical tasks, assisting with legal research, drafting documents, and managing client communications. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual having both a keen interest in law and a desire to contribute to the success of a busy law practice.

Key Responsibilities:

· Completing client identification/verification and preparing retainer letters.

· Conducting basic legal research related to wills, estates and corporate law.

· Assisting with the drafting and preparing with minimum supervision legal documents, including wills and other estate planning documents, probate application documents, incorporations, and corporate resolutions and related documentation;

· Creating and maintaining corporate records books and assisting with corporate governance matters including incorporations, amalgamations, dissolutions and restorations, and drafting shareholder agreements, corporate minutes, resolutions, alterations, and documentation for the purchase and sale of assets and shares.

· Coordinating the filing of legal documents with the courts and government agencies including the BC Corporate Registry and Corporations Canada.

· Conducting due diligence reviews of minute books, and identifying deficiencies and rectifying issues;

· Filing and organizing client files, documents and correspondence.

· Using initiative and good judgement to relieve legal professionals of administrative tasks including, but not limited to: accounting matters (trust records), invoicing, and the opening and closing of files.

· Communicating with clients and third parties in a professional and timely manner.

· Maintaining confidentiality and acting professionally at all times.

Qualifications:

· A minimum of 2 years of experience as a legal assistant or in a similar role, preferably in Wills & Estates and/or Corporate Law.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and legal practice management software (we use Clio), with an ability to proofread, edit and format Word documents, including use of advanced functionality (e.g. track changes, table of contents, mail merge, etc.).

· 1-2 years of working knowledge of ALF, BC Online, and My LTSA.

· A meticulous attention to detail.

· Ability to manage the practices of multiple lawyers.

· Strong knowledge of business and legal terminology, documents, and processes.

· Excellent organizational, time-management, and communication skills.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

· Strong interpersonal skills and a client-focused attitude.

· Having a certificate or diploma in legal assistant or paralegal studies is preferred.
