Overview
We are seeking a temporary Senior Access to Information and Privacy Officer to join our team. In this key role, you will ensure that WorkSafeBC meets its obligations under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) by providing legal expertise and strategic oversight for access to information and privacy matters.
Reporting to the Manager, Access to Information and Privacy, your work will involve analyzing and responding to complex freedom of information requests, managing high-risk privacy complaints and breaches, and ensuring compliance with privacy regulations, ministerial directives, and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC). Additionally, you will provide guidance to senior executives, represent WorkSafeBC in hearings before the OIPC, and collaborate with executives, directors, and internal departments to develop and implement best practices in privacy management and access to information. Your responsibilities will include conducting privacy impact assessments, preparing legal submissions, and delivering in-house training programs to enhance awareness and compliance across the organization.
If you are an experienced legal professional with a deep understanding of privacy law, regulatory compliance, and risk management, this is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a dynamic and high-profile area.
This is a temporary opportunity with an expected end date in May 2027.
Where you’ll work
At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines working remotely, and in our offices, based on the operational needs of the position.
In this role, you will work primarily from our Richmond Office with some flexibility to work from your home in B.C.
What you'll do
As a Senior Access to Information and Privacy Officer, you will:
- Conduct legal analysis to identify privacy risks, recommend mitigation measures and complete privacy impact assessments.
- Advise WorkSafeBC staff on the interpretation and application of FIPPA.
- Represent WorkSafeBC before the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner by conducting mediations and hearings.
- Investigate and respond to privacy complaints and privacy breaches.
- Respond to complex access to information requests, including analyzing records to identify exceptions to disclosure.
- Develop and deliver in-house training programs related to FIPPA.
Is this a good fit for you?
We’re looking for someone who can:
- Independently set priorities and follow up with relevant parties to meet strict deadlines, while managing a large workload.
- Give clear direction, instruction, and guidance while working with a variety of groups and individuals.
- Write strong decisions by interpreting applicable law and policy. Mediate and negotiate resolutions to access information and/or privacy issues.
- Prepare and present complex information and communicate in a clear and concise manner to diverse audiences.
- Consistently model the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.
Your background and experience
- Law degree plus a minimum of 5 years of recent related work experience.
- A current practicing member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia.
- International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP certification) or equivalent would be an asset.
- Communication, negotiation, legal writing, legal research, and statutory interpretation skills are essential. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Important to know
Before we can finalize any offer of employment, you must:
- Successfully meet the legal requirements under the Criminal Records Review Act to work with children and/or vulnerable adults.
- Confirm you’re legally entitled to work in Canada
