Cook

Causal - On Call

Great opportunity for an experienced Cook looking for casual work! Under the general direction of the Director of Food & Nutrition Services, assists in all areas of preparation and the administration and supervision of the department when authorized.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the preparation and processing of meals, according to the standardized recipes while observing the rules of Kashruth. 
  • Provides continuous supervision of personnel in the conduct of their duties when authorized/scheduled. 
  • In the absence of the Food Services Supervisor, the Cook ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and supply inventories when required, which includes all facets of preventative maintenance.  
  • Prepares and cooks meals.  
  • Assists in serving meals.  
  • Checks quality of food prior to service by tasting and recording temperatures.  
  • Prepares baked goods.  
  • Ensure adequate preparation for meal production on the following day.  
  • Assists with monthly inventory.  
  • Ensures the maintenance of public health standards and the requirements of other regulatory bodies. 
  • Ensures that the standards and laws of Kashruth are maintained.  
  • Ensures the preparation of food as required for prescribed therapeutic diets.  
  • Keeps own work area clean and assists with pot washing.  
  • Cleans areas as assigned by supervisor.  
  • Completes designated quality improvement activities and all related duties required by the department and as assigned by supervisor.  
  • Ensures that all duties are completed prior to completion of shift.  
  • Demonstrates willingness to co-operate with colleagues, supervisors, and members of other departments. 
  • Demonstrates consideration towards residents and visitors, and the Home's policies and procedures.  
  • Ensures the privacy, dignity, and confidentiality of the residents.    
  • Ensures the Health and Safety of residents, staff, volunteers, and visitors by following safe practices and proper procedures.  
  • Participates in in-services and continuing education. 
  • Reviews core competency in-services as required by legislation.  
  • Ensures the proper use and care of equipment.  
  • Respects and follows the proper lines of authority when reporting events or handling disputes while utilizing the process of appeal if necessary.  
  • Performs any duties as required that are necessary for the welfare of the residents and efficient operation of the Home. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and direct experience in methods of food and meal preparation in long-term care, healthcare and/or hospitality environment.
  • Holds a current Health Care Food Service Certificate.
  • Holds a current Food Handler’s Certification.
  • Working knowledge of English. Demonstrates ability to interpret verbal and written communications and instruction.
  • Able to direct other Food & Nutrition Services staff in the absence of the Director of Food & Nutrition Services.
  • Able to follow recipes and schedules of daily operation.   
  • Able to work independently and with direction.
  • Trained and conversant in proper lifting techniques of food supplies and kitchen utensils/equipment. Demonstrates skill and accuracy while performing rapid movements.
  • Appears clean, neat, well-groomed, and properly attired according to the dress code for the department. 
  • Familiarity with Jewish dietary laws and Eastern European cuisine is an asset.
