About the Opportunity

LDMLFN is looking for a full-time Senior Lands and Environmental Specialist based in Thunder Bay, ON. This role follows a 4-day workweek schedule.

Reporting to the Director of Lands and Sustainability, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across the Nation’s lands, environmental stewardship, resource development, Indigenous consultation, impact assessment, Indigenous Knowledge, and community engagement initiatives, while helping build and advance the emerging Indigenous-led Lands and Sustainability Department.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Coordinating technical reviews of mining, forestry, energy, transportation, infrastructure, Crown land, and natural resource development proposals
• Reviewing permits, environmental and impact assessments, regulatory submissions, management plans, and supporting technical documentation
• Developing consultation strategies and coordinating responses to government and proponent consultation requests
• Monitoring provincial and federal legislation, regulations, and policies affecting Indigenous rights, lands, resources, and environmental management
• Supporting the negotiation and implementation of consultation, participation, environmental stewardship, and monitoring agreements
• Coordinating Indigenous-led environmental stewardship, cumulative effects assessment, regional planning, monitoring, and adaptive management initiatives
• Coordinating field investigations, environmental inspections, technical studies, and initiatives related to biodiversity, species at risk, habitat, and watershed protection
• Supporting Indigenous Knowledge and Traditional Land Use initiatives while maintaining confidentiality and Indigenous data sovereignty
• Coordinating land use information, mapping projects, environmental databases, and the integration of Indigenous Knowledge with western science
• Leading and supporting complex environmental, natural resource, climate resilience, research, and government-funded projects
• Coordinating community engagement and building collaborative relationships with Elders, Knowledge Holders, community members, governments, proponents, consultants, and partner organizations
• Supporting departmental growth through strategic planning, policies and procedures, work plans, funding applications, reporting, staff mentorship, and external representation

About You

To qualify, you will need a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies, Forestry, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, professional experience, and demonstrated leadership. A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in environmental management, assessment and stewardship, mining, forestry, and government regulatory processes will also be essential. A valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence and the ability to travel frequently and work outdoors in varying terrain and weather conditions are also required.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

• Master’s Degree or relevant professional designation
• Experience interpreting environmental legislation, regulations, and policy
• Knowledge of Indigenous consultation and environmental regulatory processes
• Strong project management, technical writing, presentation, and negotiation capabilities
• Experience with GIS software, environmental databases, mapping systems, or spatial information management
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
