Job Summary
The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a partnership between the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine, established in 2017. The School is a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation. Its vision is to transform health and healthcare for all, achieved through innovative research and education at the convergence of engineering, medicine and biology. Through collaborative, innovative, and interdisciplinary approaches and building on UBC’s academic and research excellence, the School of Biomedical Engineering aspires to be a global leader in biomedical engineering research, education and translation. The SBME has two locations on Vancouver’s campus, the Gordon B Shrum building and the Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). The position will require the incumbent to perform a variety of moderately complex tasks to support research activities and projects with genotyping workflows, including sample preparation, DNA/RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, PCR-based assays, data documentation, quality control activities, while maintaining strict adherence to standard operating procedures and health and safety guidelines. The position provides an opportunity to learn techniques that are growing in demand and valuable in many areas of biological research. The work performed will provide services throughout the BRC and UBC. It is most important that the candidate maintain the responsibilities of these services in order to provide top quality for customers.
Organizational Status
Reports to and works closely with the Manager of the Genotyping Facility.
Work Performed
The responsibilities will include and extend from the following:
- Assisting in sample preparation, performing genotyping assays, and analyzing data to interpret experiment results,
- Maintaining instruments, such as Thermal Cycler, quantitative PCR, Capillary Electrophoresis, and any other related devices, including software updates,
- Maintaining laboratory materials, reagents inventory levels to prevent excess stock, and coordinating the timely supplies,
- Assisting in organizing and standardizing sample handling procedures to ensure accurate documentation, data recording, and traceability of samples information,
- Receiving samples submitted by facility users and verifying the sample identification to ensure proper storage and tracking in the laboratory.
- Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to follow procedures and direction will result in incorrect data production and will result in the delay of production of research services to end user and possibly major financial losses to the service core.
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision in carrying out familiar phases of duties and responsibilities; receives additional instructions whether assays are completed or re-assays are required to solve existing problems.
Supervision Given
May distribute work assignments to students or employees at lower classification level.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Operates tasks utilizing good documentation and standardized operations.

- Reliability and commitment to projects and responsibilities.
- Accountable in all instances for the accurate execution of genotyping assays, proper documentation of results, adherence to standard operating procedures, and maintenance of quality and safety standards.
- Strict and thorough attention to detail and organizational skills to ensure accuracy, consistency, and reliability in all laboratory activities.
- Great communication and Interpersonal skills with team members and customers
- Basic laboratory practices, molecular biology, biochemistry, and computer knowledge; pipetting, conventional PCR, Real-Time PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, use of excel spreadsheets, word, PowerPoint etc considered an asset.
- Familiarity with Gene Expression and SNPs analysis considered very valuable.
