Mechanical Design Engineer, Line Support (Afternoons)
Position Summary:
Reporting to a Design Engineering Supervisor, the successful candidate will provide design engineering support for manufacturing by resolving production issues, coordinating engineering design changes, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve product quality, manufacturing efficiency, cost reductions and resolve functional issues with machines.
This position is on-site, at Skyjack Plant 2 and supports the afternoon shift operations.
Performance Expectations:
- Collaborate with a core multifunctional team assigned to resolve production line issues to improve functioning of production line and resolve issues related to design.
- Investigate and resolve bill of material (BOM) issues.
- Prepare concept, and design and production drawings with supporting calculations and material data ensuring that designs meet specification requirements and manufacturing capabilities.
- Identify and assist with implementing cost reductions for process and design.
- Workday typically includes being part time in the production shop to assess and identify issues along with core team, and part time designing at a computer, attending meetings and interacting with other colleagues.
- Design, formulate and produce complete product related changes for current products in a continuous improvement environment. Improve warranty, ease of assembly, and expand product options for production.
- Maintain thorough documentation for all aspects of assigned projects.
- Investigate functional issues with machines to diagnose faulty operation and make recommendations for improvement.
- Provide support in checking details, assemblies, and BOMs for assigned projects.
- Apply a wide variety of established or modified engineering methods or techniques with considerable independence of action.
- Other duties as assigned.
Credentials:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or C.E.T. in a Mechanical or Electrical discipline.
- Preference will be given to candidates registered or working towards their P.Eng designation.
Desired Characteristics:
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Mechanical / Electrical designer in a heavy equipment (or related) manufacturing environment.
- Experience editing and generating drawings for production intent.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Mechanical design, GD&T, DFMEA, welding/fabrication processes.
- Design experience with SolidWorks (with formal training preferred); experience with FEA desirable.
- Good working knowledge of mechanical design, GD&T, DFMEA, welding / fabrication processes, hydraulic controls and general electrical skills.
- Design experience with SolidWorks (with formal training preferred); experience with FEA desirable.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work well with a cross functional technical team as well as with manufacturing personnel.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
