2023 Better Work Awards questions

1. What are Indeed’s Better Work Awards?

Millions of employees rate and review their company on Indeed each year, including rating their work wellbeing. Based on the work wellbeing ratings shared by employees over the past year, Indeed has determined the 2023 Top Companies for Work Wellbeing in the US, UK, and Canada.

2. How are winners determined?

Companies with work wellbeing ratings shared by employees over the past year were considered for our 2023 awards. In addition, companies were considered if they had at least 1,000 employees at the end of the eligibility time frame. Over the past year, companies must also have received a minimum number of employees rating their work wellbeing. For the US list, at least 200 employees must have rated a company’s work wellbeing, for the Canada list, at least 150 employees, and for the UK list, at least 100 employees. See more in our complete awards methodology.

3. How do I submit my company for an Indeed award?

There is no nomination process and no cost for a company to be considered. Indeed awards are based on reviews, ratings, and insights shared voluntarily and anonymously by employees on Indeed when they complete a company review

This means all companies with company ratings, reviews, and/or work wellbeing responses are considered. And this is what helps set Indeed awards apart from other awards programs; our winners are based on how employees feel working at a company! We encourage employees to share a review on Indeed to help their company be considered for future awards. Reviews shared by employees must meet Indeed’s Company Reviews Policies & Guidelines.

4. Why are Award scores for winning companies slightly different from scores I see on Indeed Company Pages?

For Indeed’s Better Work Awards, our methodology takes into account feedback shared by employees on Indeed over a 12-month timeframe to give job seekers and employers the freshest look into top companies. In addition, for country-specific lists as part of our Awards program, we look at feedback shared by local employees per country. For example, our Canada list looks at feedback shared by employees over the past 12 months and feedback shared by employees based in Canada. For these reasons, the awards score may be different from what you see on a company’s page on Indeed. As a reminder, the score you see on Indeed Company Pages is calculated differently than the Awards score because it takes into account all reviews, ratings, and feedback shared by employees over the past several years, and it takes into account feedback from employees based in all locations (anywhere in the world).

5. How can I stay up to date on everything related to these awards?

This is only the beginning for our awards, as we’re looking to grow the program to honour deserving organizations' efforts beyond work wellbeing in future years.

You can follow our Awards page for updates.

6. I have more questions about these awards. Who can I ask about them?

7. Why does Indeed measure work wellbeing?

Indeed collects and displays wellbeing insights to help people find better work, and to inspire companies to foster environments where people can thrive. This data is useful for job seekers as they evaluate which companies to work for. It is also useful for organizations, giving clarity on how they compare to other companies across a variety of wellbeing dimensions, and a deeper understanding of their workforce.

Since we started collecting work wellbeing data, over 15.3 million survey responses have been submitted, enabling us to provide data for thousands of companies. We make these scores freely accessible to users of Indeed.

8. How were the Work Wellbeing questions and dimensions identified?

The Work Wellbeing methodology has been developed with the guidance of Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky (Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Vice Chair, University of California, Riverside), and Prof. Jan-Emmanuel De Neve (Professor of Economics and Behavioural Science, University of Oxford).

The methodology is based on existing standards in social science for measuring general wellbeing (incorporating evaluative, affective, and eudaimonic dimensions of wellbeing) and is applied by institutions such as the OECD, UK Office of National Statistics, and the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre.

The Work Wellbeing Score brings together the following four survey questions:

  • Happiness: I feel happy at work most of the time.
  • Purpose: My work has a clear sense of purpose.
  • Satisfaction: Overall, I am completely satisfied with my job.
  • Stress-free: I feel stressed at work most of the time.

These and other survey questions are answered on a scale ranging from "strongly disagree" to "strongly agree."

Indeed also measures additional insights to help explain what drives these wellbeing indicators. These are achievement, appreciation, belonging, compensation, energy, flexibility, inclusion, learning, management, support, and trust.

The wellbeing driver questions are:

  • Achievement: I am achieving most of my goals at work.
  • Appreciation: There are people at work who appreciate me as a person.
  • Belonging: I feel a sense of belonging in my company.
  • Compensation: I am paid fairly for my work.
  • Energy: In most of my work tasks, I feel energized.
  • Flexibility: My work has the time and location flexibility I need.
  • Inclusion: My work environment feels inclusive and respectful of all people.
  • Learning: I often learn something at work.
  • Management: My manager helps me succeed.
  • Support: There are people at work who give me support and encouragement.
  • Trust: I can trust people in my company.

9. How is the Work Wellbeing Score calculated?

The Work Wellbeing Score is a composite metric on Indeed that measures the key work wellbeing indicators: happiness, stress, satisfaction, and purpose. These four items are weighed equally when calculating the Work Wellbeing Score.

Indeed users self-identify the name of their employer at the beginning of the survey. These questions are displayed to Indeed users as a full set and the survey appears when an Indeed user goes to leave a company review for an employer.

Respondents answer these questions on a five-point scale, where 1=strongly disagree and 5=strongly agree. Points are assigned for each response on a scale ranging from 40 to 100. For example, when an employee selects "Strongly agree," a point value of 100 is assigned, and when an employee selects "Strongly disagree," a point value of 40 is assigned.

10. How do I improve my company’s Work Wellbeing Score?

The best way to improve your company’s Work Wellbeing Score is to take action. This means encouraging your current employees to take the survey, tracking performance over time, identifying areas to improve, and showcasing your strengths to maximize your employer brand.

11. How can I learn more about Indeed’s Work Wellbeing Initiative?
