Full job description

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for a joint position with research teams of Dr. Leyla Soleymani at McMaster University and Dr. Mahla Poudineh at the University of Waterloo. The joint position offers the unique advantage of accessing the combined resources, expertise, and facilities of both labs and universities, providing an exceptional collaborative environment for advancing the development of wearable, electrochemical, point-of-care biosensors.

The roles will involve working closely with cross-functional teams within both academia and industry to translate research findings into practical solutions. This is an exceptional opportunity for individuals with a background in electrochemistry, bioengineering, biosensing, or related fields to make significant contributions in advancing healthcare technologies.

Key responsibilities:

  • Perform research in assay design, device and hydrogel microneedle fabrication, and characterization of electrochemical biosensors.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members and stakeholders to integrate findings into diagnostic platforms.
  • Plan and perform experiments, analyze experimental data, disseminate knowledge in the form of reports/presentations, and contribute to publications.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate lab members involved in related research projects.
  • Liaise with industry and external partners.
  • Participate in commercialization activities including market research, pitch competitions, and fundraising.

Required qualifications:

  • PhD obtained in the last two years in Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related fields.
  • Previous research experience in at least three of the following areas: antibody and/or nucleic acid-based biosensing, electrochemistry, polymer synthesis and hydrogel microneedle fabrication, or micro/nano fabrication.
  • Proficiency in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific writing.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusivity.

Beneficial qualifications:

  • Experience in developing biosensors for continuous monitoring of physiological parameters.
  • Proficiency in conducting in vivo experiments or human testing.
  • Experience with regulatory/ethical requirements for in vivo use of medical devices.
  • Proficiency in preclinical research, particularly in the use of mouse models for testing and validation of biosensors.

The applicant will have access to world-class facilities for microfabrication, electron microscopy, biointerface engineering and characterization, and healthcare translation. The postdoctoral fellow will work in a diverse and multi-disciplinary team led by Professor Soleymani at McMaster University (https://experts.mcmaster.ca/display/soleyml) and Professor Poudineh at University of Waterloo (https://ideation-lab.com/) with tremendous opportunities for collaboration with health scientists.

The applicant should be flexible to work at both laboratories (Hamilton and Waterloo) for the transfer of knowledge between the two environments.

We value a diverse range of skills, backgrounds, and personality traits and aim to attract a diverse group of researchers to our lab. We value willingness to collaborate within the lab and with external researchers, to take initiative, and to work toward continuous improvement. We welcome applicants that feel they fit with our values and can enthusiastically contribute to a supportive and a collaborative team environment.

Position is an initial 12 months contract with possible extension for another 12 months, start date as soon as possible.
