Full job description

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs phlebotomy on in-patients (including patients in isolation).
  • Follows Epic workflow to complete the collection process.
  • Prioritizes the stat samples and completes all the morning bloodwork by 9am.
  • Performs ECG and Holter on in-patients
  • Performs pre-analytical tasks (e.g. centrifugation, aliquot, etc.)
  • Adds specimens to the packing list and sends them over to St. Michael’s Hospital in accordance with TDG requirements
  • Sends specimens to other external labs when needed
  • Ensures adequate inventory of supplies and equipment as required and monitors expiration date.
  • Keeps work areas and the lab neat and tidy at all times.
  • Responds to all telephone inquiries.
  • Performs routine maintenance on ECGs, Holters and other lab equipment
  • Troubleshoots issues related to orders, ECG and Holters.
  • Troubleshoots issues with lab equipment.
  • Ensures Accreditation Canada standards are met.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of the quality management system by writing/updating SOPs.
  • Reviews and address all non-conformance incidents in the corporate safety reporting system and initiate corrective actions.
  • Implements quality improvement processes.
  • Ensures a safe working environment is maintained
  • Investigates risk situations and submits incident reports
  • Asks for and gives assistance on own initiative to all other team members.
  • Maintains and submits timely accurate and complete monthly statistics as assigned.
  • Promotes and maintains effective communication with other team members, patients and relatives and other hospital personnel; demonstrates professional and interpersonal skills.
  • Liaises effectively with the Operations Leader and participates (when required) in teaching programs related to phlebotomy to students.
  • Utilizes proper channels of communication to keep team members, patient care managers and administration informed of pertinent activities within the department
  • Follows Hospital Policy and Procedures, Rules and Regulations and legislated standards.
  • Maintains accurate and legible departmental records.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of a recognized Laboratory Assistant/Technician Program or equivalent experience required.
  • MLPAO or CSMLS certification required.
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification an asset.
  • Must be proficient in phlebotomy and all aspects of specimen handling.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work independently and prioritize workload in a fast paced environment.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively and constructively with other team members.
  • Must understand and be committed to the mission and values of Unity Health Toronto.
  • Must be punctual and have an excellent attendance record.

HOURS OF WORK: Rotational Shift, Monday to Sunday, 6am to 4pm.
