Full job description

Your Job Title: ACORN Field Organizer - Full Time

Where you will work: 3-month training in Toronto or Calgary ACORN offices, then reporting to BC ACORN's office in downtown New Westminster.

Salary / Compensation: $43,400 plus benefits.

ACORN is a community action group / union that punches above its weight class. If you want to win victories for tenants and working-class people—and not just talk about it—ACORN is the place for you.

Recent ACORN victories: Rent caps and eviction protections in New Brunswick; anti-tenant displacement policies in Toronto, Hamilton, and London, Ontario; a landlord-use eviction ban in BC; a maximum heat bylaw in New Westminster; and capping NSF bank fees at $10, saving working-class Canadians hundreds of millions annually.

Job Summary: The job of any organizer is a field organizing position; it's not a desk job. ACORN organizing is no different. The job provides the opportunity to learn organizing through hands-on experience, working full-time while earning a reasonable salary funded by ACORN's low-to-moderate-income members. ACORN's member-run structure means you are accountable to the people you organize.

Four main roles of the job:

- Outreach: Door knocking, street canvassing, and petitioning to bring new people into the organization and then linking them to the existing membership and campaigns.

- Fundraising: Maintain and grow ACORN's existing base of monthly member dues and donations.

- Learn how to be an ACORN community organizer: Out-of-province training with an experienced ACORN organizer will enable you to learn how ACORN's organizing model works. The model is tried, tested, and true—your job will be to learn from our experts and then organize communities back in Metro Vancouver.

Qualifications and Skill Sets: Strong people skills; work ethic and self-discipline; ability to work in a team setting where you are sometimes leading and sometimes following; ;istening skills; social media and communication skills; conflict resolution

Hours and Compensation:

- $43,400 salary in the first year. Increases annually.

- Phone and transportation allowance

- Health benefits, pension, and sick days after a 6-month probationary period.

- Room for growth in the organization. Full-time positions are available, and we hire from within because we need people who know how to organize to run the organization.

- Afternoons and evenings until 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Two Saturday shifts per month.
