Full job description
MONUWEHKAHAL HOMES
Location: Fredericton, NB
Position: Youth Support Worker
Hours: Flexible scheduling, including days, evenings, and weekends.
Monuwehkahal Homes (an Oromocto First Nation organization) operates homes for children, youth, and adults in need of alternative housing solutions. Our mission is to offer exceptional care rooted in dignity, compassion, and evidence-informed practices.
To make this possible, we seek team members who bring kindness, patience, compassion, professionalism, and proactive dedication to their work. In return, we offer a market-leading compensation package, including comprehensive medical, dental, and pension benefits for full-time employees after they successfully complete their probation period.
Your Impact as a Youth Support Worker
As a Youth Support Worker, you will join a multidisciplinary team within a single care home, with the primary goal of ensuring every child or young person in your care has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Both part-time and full-time positions are available, and we are seeking motivated individuals committed to supporting young people in a 24/7 care environment.
Youth Support Workers work rotating eight-hour shifts, including mornings, afternoons, and overnight shifts, across weekdays, weekends, and public holidays. While Monuwehkahal seeks to accommodate the general availability of its employees wherever possible, flexibility is essential to meet service needs, and there are often open shifts available for proactive employees who wish to take on additional hours. Applicants must be reliable, punctual, and adaptable, with access to reliable transport, as shifts may occur at varying times.
In this role, there will be no two days that look the same, and there may be periods of significant challenge. However, the rewards of seeing children and youth flourish due to your efforts are unmatched.
Your Responsibilities as a Youth Support Worker
- Collaborate with your team in providing direct care and supervision to children, youth, and/or adults in the home, ensuring each individual’s social-worker–developed care plan is fully and consistently implemented
- Ensure that a supportive environment within the home is always maintained, including through actively listening to clients, taking an interest in their interests, participating in activities, and generally helping them reach their full potential
- Maintain a positive “role model” presence in the home by consistently demonstrating compassion, kindness, patience, and proactive support towards those in your care, as well as professionalism in all interactions with your co-workers
- Support a clean and organized home environment through routine cleaning, meal preparation, laundry, and other household-related activities
- Communicate professionally with co-workers and complete all necessary client reporting, on time and in-depth, through the tools and systems provided to you
What We’re Looking For (Preferred Qualifications)
- A minimum of one year of experience in a similar role with a focus on child or youth care (preference may be given to candidates who have worked specifically with First Nation children or youth in care)
- Experience completing regular in-depth reporting or the attention to detail necessary to successfully do so (reporting will need to be submitted after each shift, no exceptions)
- Ability to work collaboratively and constructively with team members in high-pressure, fast-paced work environments
- Demonstrated knowledge of the child and youth care system, along with an understanding of conflict de-escalation strategies, trauma-informed care principles, and strengths-based care practices
- Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance (minimum $1M liability), and a willingness to transport clients on occasion (excellent applicants who do not have the ability to drive will be considered)
- A willingness to take on additional shifts, with minimal notice, if needed
What You Must Have (Minimum Qualifications)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated history of compassion and professionalism
- Ability to successfully pass a criminal background and vulnerable sector check
- Current CPR certification (NVCI, ASIST, or similar certifications are considered an asset)
Monuwehkahal Homes is an equal opportunity employer committed to creating an inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals who are legally entitled to work in Canada. We thank all applicants for their interest. However, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
