Schedule: 80 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM

The Utility Operator in Training position is a great opportunity to grow into a long-term Public Works Career. If you are interested in working outside in all weather conditions, being hands-on with tools, equipment, excavation, and construction practices, supporting watermain repairs, service connections and system maintenance; and earning EOCP Wastewater Collection or Water Distribution certification over time, this may be the opportunity for you!

This position works in Pumps, Meters and Valves. This is an entry-level position performing manual work of some variety in the performance of utility system operations and general labour. The incumbent performs related tasks including Water Metre Reading; the installation of Water meters and their maintenance; usage of software to collect information; customer service with residents regarding water meters. assists in the operation and maintenance of water and sewer system components including mains, services, valves, hydrants, meters, and pumps; observes and assists in water chlorination, quality testing and monitoring to ensure compliance with standards, and performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks related to public works and utilities. Completed work is checked by a supervisor for quality, safety, and adherence to standards. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by some experience in construction, maintenance, or utility system operations; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. EOCP Certification - Operator in Training is desirable. Working knowledge of water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems and storm systems including operational principles and maintenance procedures; of methods, techniques, tools, and materials used in construction, maintenance, and public works operations. Ability to learn and operate various tools and equipment safely and effectively; to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks requiring physical stamina, strength, and coordination; to interact effectively with team members, supervisors, and the public; to perform the required duties, including lifting heavy equipment and working in various weather conditions. A valid Class 5 Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
