Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus Edmonton.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a Research Associate who will work directly with the Emergency Medicine Research Group (EMeRG) and its Director and who will contribute to the research and educational activities of the team. The EMeRG Director's research program contains a portfolio of national and international projects spanning a number of cardio-respiratory, neurological, operational and injury conditions, methodological as well as applied research studies including collaborations with colleagues at research institutions in Europe, United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. The Research Associate will lead research activities under the direction of the Director as well as provide managerial leadership to the research projects. This position will be responsible for providing high-level methodological support to the EMeRG team; abstract and manuscript preparation; other responsibilities may include teaching and workshop instruction; meeting and workshop development; and conference support. The successful candidate will be responsible for fostering strong relationships and collaboration across internal and external disciplines.

• Liaises with biostatisticians/methodologists at collaborating institutions, identifies future opportunities for research collaborations with these Institutions in areas that complement the research foci of the EMeRG group;
• Prepares proposals for new research activities, includes assisting the Director in preparing research grant applications and contract proposals;
• Liaises with international collaborators to ensure the delivery of current research programs to time, quality and budget;
• Leads the EMeRG team in the implementation of new methods in the design of research and development of programs for Emergency Medicine innovations;
• Leads the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures for all stages of data management and analysis for members of the EMeRG team;
• Oversees the analysis of research results and provides statistical analyses plans, and associated text for research grant applications led by members of the EMeRG team;
• Conducts quality analysis and quality assurance on research operations, methodology, etc., and advises and/or creates databases and data entry protocols; liaises with programmers and data entry clerks to ensure data quality;
• Designs experiments, data collection protocols and standards; assists staff in the preparation of data for presentations and the writing and revision of research manuscripts and reports;
• Creates and coordinates virtual and in-person workshops and committee meetings;
• Contributes to the dissemination of Departmental research activities to affiliated communities; presents research results in team meetings, at seminars, scientific conferences and/or related settings;
• Performs, and oversees junior staff performing, data cleaning, data management and statistical analyses including basic and advance analysis; provides interpretation of the results of statistical analyses;
• Contributes directly to, and supervises junior Research Assistants in the development of case report forms, to ensure all important data is collected;
• Supervises Research Assistants and junior Research Associates in the development of protocols, ethics submissions, and reviews for Department research studies;

MD with a graduate degree (PhD preferred) in a related health discipline such as: epidemiology, biostatistics, health outcomes, or population health research is required. The successful candidate must have a proven record of research productivity and accomplishment.

Additional requirements for this position are as follows:

• Very strong oral and written skills in English are required;
• Excellent computer skills using MS Word, Excel, Office, and Internet applications;
• Proven experience with various research methods (e.g., quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods);
• Experience with working under short timelines, with proven ability to adhere to strict schedules and deadlines;
• Strong command of at least two of the following statistical software package programming languages: SAS, SPSS, and/or STATA is required;
• Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills;
• Excellent leadership within a team environment.

This position offers a comprehensive benefits package with an annual salary range of $83,195 to $93,603.

The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule E of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
