Job Vacancy – Ready Mix Driver
BUTLER CONCRETE & AGGREGATE LTD
Victoria, BC
Salary: $37.38 per hour (union position, $29.03 per hour for the first 60 shifts)
Who we are
Butler Concrete & Aggregate is a third generation-run operation that has served southern Vancouver Island for more than 80 years. Today, we are an industry leader adopting new technologies to pursue product quality and reduce our environmental impact. With a full suite of EPDs we have the lowest published embodied carbon values in North America. With many long-serving staff members, we take pride in our positive work environment and strong relations throughout the community.
We have a long-standing relationship with Lafarge Holcim being one of the first customers to the Richmond BC cement plant. Our current operations consist of 4 concrete depots and 3 sand and gravel pits. Our growing fleet of over 40 10-metre concrete delivery trucks gives us the largest capacity in our service area. With almost 100 staff involved in the operations today, we anticipate continued growth in the years ahead.
The opportunity
Butler Concrete & Aggregate Ltd. has immediate openings for Ready Mix Drivers in Victoria, BC, located on Vancouver Island. In this role, you’ll drive a transit mixer truck equipped with an auxiliary concrete mixer to deliver concrete mix and other related construction products to job-sites. You will work directly with customers, perform yard maintenance and support, communicate with office staff and management, and aid in manufacturing concrete blocks. This is a physically demanding role and covers a lot more ground than your typical driving job.
The details
- Abide by Company Personnel Policy Manual, safety minutes, and internal memos while performing duties safely.
- Perform pre- and post-trip safety checks on equipment daily to ensure safe operation. Document any maintenance that may be required. Notify Dispatch and Shop of any maintenance or repairs that require immediate attention.
- Back truck under loading hopper when instructed, start mixer to receive concrete. Follows guidelines and instructions by dispatch personnel.
- Drive truck to designated job-site for unloading. Must distinguish between safe and unsafe conditions at the job-site, in traffic and throughout plant areas.
- Assemble concrete chute and attach chute to the back of the truck. Control appropriate levers and control on truck to discharge concrete according to specifications from the contractor into a wheelbarrow or other conveying container, like a pump, or directly into area to be poured with concrete.
- If appropriate, wash out truck at the job-site and replace chute on truck after delivery to prevent concrete from hardening in mixer, on truck, and on chutes.
- Clean truck surface with cleaning solution while wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
- When the workload is light, assist other areas of the plants, do yard clean-up, strip and move blocks, clean up pads, shovel at multiple locations throughout the yard, perform dust control and other duties as assigned.

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, city directories, road maps, load ticket, MSDS sheets and memos

- Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to use and understand Google Forms, Microsoft OneDrive, Online Map services. Able to use these programs on a tablet.
- Must have a valid Commercial Drivers License (Class 3 minimum) with Air Endorsement. Must have valid license and ability to meet requirements of the company's insurance program.
- Previous commercial truck driving experience and concrete work is preferred.
