Registered Nurse

Job Description

APEX Surgical- Centre for Oral + Facial Surgery is a Maxillofacial surgery clinic which specializes in the practice of full scope oral and maxillofacial surgery. With expertise ranging from wisdom tooth removal and dental implant surgery to corrective jaw surgery, management of facial deformities and traumatic facial injuries. The surgicenter provides procedural sedation in conjunction with a medical anesthetist to maximize patient comfort and safety. We aim to provide the highest level of oral, facial and implant surgical services to patients in Kamloops and surrounding area.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Surgeon, the Registered Nurse is a key member of the clinical team and plays an important role in the clinic’s surgical procedures and patient treatment. The Registered Nurse roles endorses the overall wellness, safety and care of patients while assisting the surgeon as required, by administering medications and sedation, reviewing post-operative instructions with patients, and planning each day for treatment. Ensures quality and accuracy in pre-operative, operative and post-operative procedures and processes.

Key Responsibilities

1. Oversees and monitors patient care, wellness and safety. Ensures the best service is being provided to the patient at all times.

2. Administers medications and sedation to surgical patients.

3. Administers cosmetic treatments such as Botox and Dermal fillers (if qualified).

4. Monitors patients pre-operative and during operative. Recovers and monitors patients in recovery room until discharge.

5. Assists the Surgeon with patient care, preparation for surgery and provides support as required during the procedure.

6. Conducts patient charting during surgery.

7. Reviews post-operative instructions with patients and answers any questions to patients after surgery, in collaboration with the Surgeon(s).

8. Monitors medications and supplies, ensures the maintenance and upkeep of the crash cart, clinic certifications and mock codes.

9. Plans each day by ensuring medications are prepared, medical gases ready, and all emergency adjuncts are available for the day. Conducts end of day drug counts.

10. Ensures all accreditation standards and requirements are fulfilled for Apex.

11. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Current practicing registration with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (BCCNM) is required, plus a minimum of three years’ recent, related experience in an acute care and critical care environment such as the ER, OR, PACU, ICU. Experience with procedural sedation is preferred.

Completion of a recognized Critical Care Nursing program or completion of a recognized Advanced program in Emergency Care Nursing is an asset.

Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required. An equivalent combination of education, skills and experience may be considered.

Certification, training and recent, related experience in Cosmetic and Aesthetic Medicine is an asset.

· Exceptional ability to proficiently insert IV’s.

· Excellent patient support and service, interpersonal and relationship building skills with proven diplomacy.

· Possesses high standards of professional conduct; performs quality work with the highest degree of accuracy.

· Strong ethical standards and ability to safeguard patient privacy and confidentiality.

· Excellent verbal, written and organizational skills, and attention to detail.

· Able to perform multiple tasks, balance priorities and meet deadlines without close supervision. Adaptable to respond to the needs of the surgical centre and stay calm in all situations.

· Exceptional knowledge of medical information.

· Takes initiative and has a high level of ambition; motivated.

· Able to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.

· High proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Internet Explorer.

· Ability to work on-call; acts as the first point of contact for patient telephone inquiries after-hours and assists with after-hours acute care as needed.

* Wednesday - Friday. Hours of work required for this role will fluctuate based on the needs of Apex Surgical.
