Full job description

Behaviour Support Care Assistant
Temporary Part-Time (0600-1400)

The Behavior Support Care Assistant (BSCA) is part of the interdisciplinary team and is responsible for providing person centered care to Persons Living with Dementia. Working under the direction of the Behavior Support Clinician and Activation Lead, the BSCA provides short-term interventions to promote successful transitions, enhance quality of life, and recommends behavioural strategies for long-term care residents.

General duties include but are not limited to:

  • Establish therapeutic relationships with residents to understand their individual preferences, routines, and triggers, using personhood tools and direct observation.
  • Collaborate with co-BSCAs to plan and deliver individualized and small group activities. (e.g., music, reading, Montessori, fresh air visits)
  • Conduct environmental scans to identify and mitigate risks such as fall hazards, overstimulation, or unsafe interactions in common areas.
  • Calmly and professionally react to crisis situations.
  • Observe and report responsive behaviours and triggers; contribute to care planning with BSO leads.
  • Support transitions between activities and bedtime readiness with calming engagement.
  • Support dining room routines by portering residents, monitoring social interactions, assisting with meal intake documentation, and facilitating a calm dining experience.
  • Trial and evaluate behavioural interventions in collaboration with BSO leads, documenting effectiveness and adjusting strategies as needed.
  • Mentor healthcare staff in Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA), person-centered care techniques, and the use of personhood highlights to improve resident interactions.
  • Document resident behaviours, responses to interventions, and engagement outcomes using DOS and other reporting tools.
  • Participate in team huddles, care conferences, and professional development opportunities.
  • Assume other functions as may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • PSW diploma AND Post-secondary degree/diploma in Recreation Therapy, Leisure Management, Gerontology, Developmental Services Worker, Psychology or related post-secondary discipline.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience working with a geriatric population.
  • Certification in Dementiability, P.I.E.C.E.S, Montessori Dementia Certificate, U-First, Gentle Persuasive Approaches, Geriatric Certificate Program, or similar programs is considered an asset
  • Experience in long-term care or behavioural support roles preferred.
  • Strong observational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, documentation platforms).
  • For positions situated at Villa St. Gabriel Villa bilingualism considered an asset
