Payroll Specialist
Full Time Continuing Position
(Subject to Internal Staffing Process)

The Greater Victoria School District #61 is looking to hire a Payroll Specialist. This is a full time, in person, continuing position working 35 hours per week.

The Greater Victoria School District provides public educational services to over 20,000 students in the Greater Victoria area, encompassing six municipalities. To provide this service, the District has a current operating budget of $260 million and employs approximately 3,500 staff which includes teachers, principals and vice-principals, support staff, psychologists, speech and language pathologists and exempt managerial staff.

Reporting to the Manager, Payroll and Benefits, the Payroll Specialist is responsible for ensuring payroll records are reviewed for accuracy, proper authorization, compliant with legislation and collective agreements. The Payroll Specialist processes data for an automated payroll system, including various methods of time entry, absences, deductions, benefits, classifications, pay rates, withholding taxes, terminations and leaves. The Payroll Specialist is the first contact for payroll and benefit related questions from employees and external agencies.

Education and Experience:

· Grade 12 or equivalent

· Completion of the Payroll Compliance Practitioner Certificate

· Two (2) years’ specific experience in a large automated payroll office (experience working with multiple payroll registers preferred)

· Experience working with an integrated financial and human resource information system

· Experience working in a unionized environment

· Working knowledge of automated payroll systems and payroll related legislative and accounting related requirements

· Proficiency with Excel spreadsheets and word processing applications
