About West Coast LEAF

West Coast LEAF (WCL) is a feminist legal advocacy organization based in Vancouver, BC, on the homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and səlílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Through litigation, law reform and public legal education, we work toward gender justice in collaboration with people and communities most affected by overlapping systems of oppression. We are committed to decolonization, anti-racism, accessibility, movement solidarity and meaningful accountability. We are a provincially based non-profit society and federally registered charity, funded through a mix of foundation and government grants, individual donations and sponsorships of our annual International Women’s Day Equality Breakfast. WCL is a unionized workplace.

Position Summary

WCL is seeking a Manager of Community Engagement to develop and steward community relationships, coalition partnerships and organizational accountability. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Manager will support reciprocal engagement with communities, movements, coalitions and partners connected to WCL’s work. The Manager will combine relationship-building, project leadership and practical follow through and help ensure that community knowledge and lived experience inform WCL’s advocacy, public legal education, organizational learning and strategic direction.

The position provides leadership for key engagement initiatives, notably the Family Well-being Coalition, supports relationships with communities and coalition partners, collaborates on cross-organizational projects, supports the Indigenous Advisory Circle and strengthens community-engagement practices across WCL. The role is also responsible for project planning and management of key grants.

We are looking for someone with strengths in relationship-building, facilitation and project management who enjoys working collaboratively and building trust across diverse communities and partners. This 3-year position is funded by multiple grants and is part of the Union, with occasional travel and meetings outside of regular business hours.

Key Responsibilities

The Manager will:

  • Provide leadership and coordination for the Family Well-being Coalition, including planning, facilitation, partner communication and follow-through.
  • Build and steward respectful, reciprocal and accountable relationships with priority communities, coalitions and partners.
  • Work with staff to design accessible and meaningful engagement processes, including clear purposes, consent, appropriate compensation and feedback loops.
  • Bring community perspectives, emerging issues and lessons learned into organizational planning, advocacy, public legal education and decision-making.
  • Help staff build and sustain community relationships while strengthening continuity of knowledge, commitments and organizational learning.
  • Manage and support key projects, grants, budgets and reporting requirements associated with assigned initiatives.
  • Support coordination, respectful communication, documentation and accountability processes with the Indigenous Advisory Circle.
  • Support community resource pathways within WCL’s mandate and the boundaries of the role.

About You

You are a skilled relationship-builder who values reciprocity, accountability and community-centred practices. You understand that meaningful engagement requires listening, trust, transparency and follow through. You enjoy bringing people together, facilitating conversations and building connections across diverse perspectives on complex issues.

You understand community engagement as more than consultation. You can help create accessible and meaningful opportunities for participation, clarify purpose and expectations and support feedback loops between communities and organizations. You are a thoughtful collaborator who works with humility and is comfortable navigating shared accountability while respecting the distinct roles of colleagues, leadership and community partners.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

You bring:

  • Progressive experience in community engagement, organizing, partnerships, advocacy or a related field.
  • Experience building trust-based relationships with communities, movements, coalitions or community-serving organizations.
  • Understanding of, connection to, or lived and living experience of systems of oppression and their impacts on individuals and communities.
  • Experience developing accessible, trauma-informed and community-accountable engagement processes.
  • Experience facilitating coalitions, advisory bodies, working groups or community conversations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and grants, including planning, implementation, documentation, budget, evaluation, reporting, timelines and stakeholder coordination.
  • Understanding of family policing, child welfare or related systems in British Columbia.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, synthesize diverse perspectives and support follow-through on commitments.
  • Ability to navigate complexity, competing priorities and conflict with humility and sound judgment.
  • Experience working collaboratively across teams or organizations with shared accountability.
  • Demonstrated commitment to WCL’s values, which include decolonial, trans-inclusive, and intersectional feminism, and an understanding of the ongoing impacts of colonial systems and Indigenous-specific discrimination in British Columbia.

Assets

The following would strengthen an application:

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and supporting decolonizing practices.
  • Community-based research, evaluation or ethical knowledge-mobilization experience.
  • Experience with coalition governance, grassroots organizing or movement-building.
  • Experience managing grants, honoraria, contractors and funder reporting.
  • Knowledge of BC community resources and referral pathways.
  • Experience supporting advisory bodies.
