About the Role

As Market Supervisor, you will lead the day-to-day operations of an artisan market specializing in house-made sauces, fresh pasta, and thoughtfully sourced local products. You will also oversee the café counter, where guests can order fresh coffee, baked goods, and takeaway meals. Through hands-on leadership, strong retail standards, barista expertise, and careful attention to product quality, merchandising, inventory, and service, you will create a welcoming guest experience and support a profitable, well-run operation.

What You’ll Do

Retail Operations & Merchandising

  • Lead daily market operations, including opening and closing, service readiness, cleanliness, cash controls, equipment, and consistent execution of operating standards.
  • Maintain an inviting, well-organized retail environment that showcases house-made sauces, fresh pasta, local products, baked goods, and takeaway meals.
  • Plan product displays, seasonal features, signage, and promotions that strengthen the market’s identity and improve sales.
  • Monitor product quality, freshness, rotation, presentation, pricing accuracy, and availability throughout the day.
  • Coordinate with culinary and production teams to align retail quantities, features, and daily offerings.
  • Use guest feedback and sales trends to recommend new products, displays, promotions, and service improvements.

Café Counter & Guest Experience

  • Oversee counter service for fresh coffee, baked goods, and takeaway meals, ensuring speed, accuracy, quality, and warm hospitality.
  • Work confidently as a barista, prepare espresso-based and other coffee beverages to standard, and coach team members on beverage preparation and equipment care
  • Set clear standards for counter setup, order flow, product presentation, packaging, pickup, and shift handovers.
  • Ensure the team can speak knowledgeably about ingredients, local suppliers, preparation methods, allergens, storage, and serving suggestions.
  • Stay visible during busy periods, support the team in the moment, and resolve guest concerns with care and sound judgment.
  • Build a welcoming, knowledgeable service culture that encourages repeat visits and strengthens community connections.

Team Leadership & Education

  • Provide practical training on barista skills, product knowledge, guest engagement, point-of-sale procedures, food safety, sanitation, allergy awareness, and equipment care.
  • Set clear expectations, assign work effectively, provide timely feedback, and hold the team accountable for quality, service, and operational standards.
  • Build an engaged, collaborative culture across the market, café counter, restaurants, culinary, and production teams.
  • Provide fair access to cross-training, development, and opportunities to grow.

Inventory, Procurement & Business Management

  • Manage purchasing, forecasts, par levels, receiving, storage, inventory counts, stock rotation, and replenishment across retail and café-counter categories.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with approved local farmers, makers, producers, and suppliers while ensuring reliable quality, supply, and value.
  • Monitor sales, labour, food and retail costs, margins, waste, shrink, and product performance; recommend pricing, purchasing, and merchandising adjustments.
  • Verify deliveries, invoices, product specifications, quantities, and condition, and maintain accurate purchasing and inventory records.
  • Oversee POS accuracy, discounts, refunds, voids, cash reconciliation, deposits, and daily reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, allergen, labelling, workplace health and safety, and company requirements, maintaining readiness for inspections.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5+ years of progressive retail, café, specialty-food, or hospitality experience, including leadership responsibility in a quality-focused or high-volume environment.
  • Previous barista experience is required, including demonstrated skill preparing espresso-based beverages and maintaining coffee equipment.
  • Demonstrated success leading daily operations, coaching teams, maintaining service standards, and creating an outstanding guest experience.
  • Strong understanding of specialty-food retail, merchandising, inventory control, purchasing, pricing, margin management, and waste reduction.
  • Experience working with local suppliers and producers, with sound judgment in balancing quality, seasonality, availability, and cost.
  • Working knowledge of food safety, sanitation, allergen awareness, product labelling, cash controls, and inspection readiness; recognized food-safety certification is preferred.
  • Inclusive, accountable leadership with excellent communication, organization, judgment, commercial awareness, and problem-solving skills.

How You’ll Work

  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods during a shift
  • Ability to safely lift and carry items up to 25 lbs, with or without accommodation
  • Tasks may involve bending, reaching, twisting, and working on uneven or slippery surfaces

This role reflects the physical demands common in a retail and food-service environment. Accommodations are available upon request to support team members in performing their role safely and confidently.
