Job Summary
Five Hills entry-level EIT - Reliability Engineer is responsible for performing field and office engineering functions that support the reliability, maintenance, and performance improvement of mobile and fixed mechanical equipment used in mining operations. Five Hills operates surface mining facilities, thereby providing the Reliability Engineer with a broad range of practical work experience and exposure to industrial mechanical systems. This experience supports the development of technical knowledge and professional engineering skills and is beneficial in the pursuit of professional designation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and technical assessments related to the feasibility, operating performance, reliability and maintainability of fixed and mobile mechanical equipment used in surface mining and coal handling operations.
  • Analyze mechanical failures, recurring equipment defects, abnormal wear patterns and unexpected maintenance issues, and support the development of practical corrective actions and long-term reliability improvements.
  • Develop and improve preventive and predictive maintenance standards, inspection routines, equipment strategies, job plans and shutdown scopes for crushers, conveyors, pumps, rotating equipment and other plant mechanical systems.
  • Prepare technical reports, reliability analyses, maintenance recommendations, equipment condition summaries and supporting documentation for capital repairs, component replacements and system improvement initiatives.
  • Support the planning and execution of mechanical improvement projects by preparing scopes of work, material requirements, cost estimates, schedules and technical specifications in coordination with operations, maintenance and contractors.
  • Provide field engineering support during installation, modification, inspection, commissioning and troubleshooting of mechanical systems and components in industrial and mine site environments.
  • Review equipment history, maintenance data and field observations to identify bad actors, optimize maintenance intervals and improve asset performance, availability and life-cycle cost.
  • Work closely with maintenance supervisors, planners, technicians, operations personnel and external vendors to implement mechanical reliability initiatives and continuous improvement projects.
  • Assist with technical evaluation of repair options, contractor proposals, replacement components and maintenance work scopes to ensure safe, practical and cost-effective solutions.
  • Perform other related engineering and site-support duties as required.

Additional Duties

  • Assisting other staff in the collection and review of condition monitoring data, equipment history, inspection findings, and field observations.
  • Communicate engineering findings, maintenance recommendations, and reliability improvement proposals to internal stakeholders and contractors.
  • Assist with technical drawings, equipment records, BOM verification, and support drafting of maintenance scopes and tender documents.
  • Responsible for performing other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Registered as Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) with APEGA, or eligible for registration

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, industrial maintenance practices, and reliability principles
  • Knowledge of mobile and fixed equipment used in mining or heavy industrial operations
  • Familiarity with maintenance planning systems, engineering drawings, technical specifications, and asset performance data
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, technical reporting, and engineering documentation; experience with CMMS, Solidworks, or vibration/condition monitoring tools is considered an asset
  • Excellent technical writing and reporting skills for engineering and maintenance documentation
  • Ability to work independently in the field and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Organized, analytical, and detail-oriented, with strong communication and time management skills
  • Experience with failure analysis, maintenance strategy development, and equipment performance evaluation is considered an asset

Physical Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to perform field work in variable outdoor conditions (rain, snow, rugged terrain)
  • Must be able to carry equipment and tools (up to 50 lbs), conduct site walks, and wear PPE
  • Comfortable transitioning between office and field environments as required

Work Environment

  • Office setting 70%
  • Field setting 30%

Pay: $70,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
