Full job description
A perfect fit is a Langley local that is an ULTRA ORGANIZED, BUBBLY, ENTHUSIASTIC MATURE PERSON who loves bringing out the best in people and uniting the community through music, crafts, exercise, and engaging discussions (e.g., book club, TED Talks).
Commute time: Must be 20 minutes or less. Being a part of our surrounding community is important.

Direct Supervisors: General Manager (Anita Wormald) & Assistant Manager (Elsie Bosma)
· Status: Permanent, full-time (Five 8-hour shifts per week; requires regular weekend and evening event coverage)
· Location: Murrayville in Langley, V3A 0C1 (Avalon Gardens Supportive Independent Living Condo – a 127-suite supportive senior living community)
· Direct Supervisors: General Manager & Assistant Manager
CORE MANDATE: The fun-filled, energetic mission is to design, promote, and lead vibrant events and wellness programs that bring our community together and spark joy for our residents (aged 80+).
o Success in this role relies on active participation along with empowering the Activities team (including paid part-time staff & volunteers) to foster meaningful, personal relationships with a diverse group of elders and valuing their unique interests, abilities, and requests.
o Part of our "secret sauce" includes regular, collaborative debriefs with your leadership team to evaluate, grow, and elevate the Activities Department’s successes and challenges.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Resident Programs & Activities
· Clubs & Activities: Support and schedule resident-run clubs (e.g., Bingo, Mah Jong, crafts, art, etc.). Coordinate space, staff, volunteers, and promotional posters.
· Event Planning: Organize weekly exercise classes, bi-monthly musical entertainment, monthly birthday parties, movie nights, and a semi-annual Fall & Spring Craft Fair.
· Outings & Media: Schedule weekly bus trips (coordinating with drivers and volunteers). Format and distribute the monthly newsletter and weekly activity calendars.
· Library & Amenities: Manage the building library and the Fraser Valley Library Outreach program, including treating new books for pests.
2. Building, Decor, & Team Management
· Seasonal Decorating: Ensure the entire facility (lobby, dining room, elevators) is dynamically decorated for all major holidays and seasons.
· Team Leadership: Supervise and schedule part-time Activities Assistants; recruit, inspire, and schedule community and family volunteers. Ensure proper safety practices and WorkSafeBC standards are upheld and instilled across the team.
· Facility Care: Handle the daily feeding and basic upkeep of the indoor fish tank and outdoor fishpond.
3. Marketing & Administration
· Marketing Support: Coordinate with marketing on fundraisers/fairs, take event photos, and update the lobby slideshow.
· Budgeting: Document all department expenses, manage a monthly spreadsheet, track vendor invoices, and submit yearly budget proposals.
· Surveys: Establish evaluation tools to measure resident satisfaction.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
· Experience: 2+ years of computer graphics experience (e.g., Publisher/Adobe) and 2+ years of experience updating business websites/Facebook pages. Prior experience working with seniors (80+) is essential.
· Soft Skills: High emotional intelligence, public speaking confidence, exceptional organization (planning 3–12 months in advance), and professional diplomacy.
· Creative Talents: Skills in floral design, arts, crafts, and music.
· Certifications & Compliance:
o Must pass a Criminal Record Check (CRC) for Vulnerable Adults.
o Current Emergency First Aid – Level 1 OFA.
o Valid Driver’s License (Class 4 license with a clean abstract to drive the shuttle bus is required, or a willingness to obtain it).
o Assets: Food Safe, Serving It Right, and WHMIS certificates.
· Training & Confidentiality: Must successfully comply with our ongoing orientation and training program upon hire. Strict adherence to resident and operational confidentiality is a mandatory part of working with the Vulnerable Sector of BC.
