Job Description: Community Recreational and Leisure Programs Consultant (Summer Student)

Position: Summer position for 7 weeks

Wage: $17.85/hr.-$20.00/hr.; Full-time 30 hours a week

Conditions: Must be able to work full-time from July 13th to August 28th, 2026

About Us

The South Granville Seniors Centre is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of older adults through inclusive social, recreational, educational, and wellness programs. We foster connection, lifelong learning, and healthy aging within a welcoming and diverse community.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and creative Community Recreational and Leisure Programs Consultant to support the planning, development, coordination, and evaluation of engaging recreational opportunities for older adults.

This position is ideal for students pursuing studies in Recreation, Leisure Studies, Gerontology, Community Development, Social Services, Health Promotion, Sociology, or related fields.

Position Summary

The Community Recreational and Leisure Programs Consultant will assist with the development and implementation of recreational programs and community initiatives designed to promote active aging, social inclusion, wellness, and community participation among seniors.

The student will gain practical experience in recreation programming, event coordination, participant engagement, community outreach, and program evaluation while supporting a meaningful community-based organization

Tasks & Responsibilities

1. Recreation Program Planning & Development

  • Assist with planning, developing, and coordinating recreational and leisure programs for older adults.
  • Research new activities, trends, and wellness initiatives that support active and healthy aging.
  • Help create culturally inclusive, engaging, and accessible recreational opportunities.
  • Assist with preparing program materials, schedules, and activity plans.

2. Community Events & Special Initiatives

  • Support the coordination and delivery of Centre events and celebrations including:
  • Summer BBQ
  • Annual General Meeting
  • Aging with Pride
  • Community celebrations and outreach events
  • Assist with event logistics including registrations, volunteer support, setup, participant engagement, and coordination.

3. Summer Outings & Leisure Experiences

  • Assist with planning community outings and day trips for seniors.
  • Coordinate transportation arrangements, attendance tracking, waivers, ticket purchases, and communication with venues.
  • Prepare trip information packages and participant materials.

4. Member Engagement & Outreach

  • Build positive relationships with seniors and encourage participation in programs.
  • Assist with outreach efforts to socially isolated older adults through phone calls, emails, and community engagement activities.
  • Welcome participants and provide support during programs and events.

5. Program Evaluation & Administrative Support

  • Conduct participant surveys and assist with gathering feedback using tools such as Google Forms or SurveyMonkey.
  • Support data entry, attendance tracking, and program evaluation reporting.
  • Assist with creating program summaries and basic reports.
  • Support general administrative duties and Centre operations as required.

Assets

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Experience coordinating programs, events, or recreational activities.
  • Experience working or volunteering with older adults.
  • Knowledge of recreation programming or active aging principles.
  • Familiarity with Canva or design software.
  • Experience conducting surveys or community needs assessments.
  • Knowledge of community resources available to seniors.
  • Creativity and innovation in program design.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Genuine interest in working with older adults and supporting community well-being.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong customer service skills and a welcoming attitude.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) wage subsidy program. Eligible student participants must:

● Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.

● Have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year.

● Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

● Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
