Recreation Program Assistant

POSITION OVERVIEW
The City of Maple Ridge is seeking an energetic, service-oriented and community-minded professional to support the delivery of high-quality fitness and recreation programming. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about health, wellness and inclusive community recreation, and who enjoys working in a dynamic environment with instructors, volunteers, participants and staff.
The Recreation Program Assistant supports the planning, scheduling, coordination and on-site delivery of fitness and recreation programs, with an emphasis on group fitness, wellness, active living and community participation. The successful candidate will help ensure programs run safely, efficiently and to a high customer service standard.
What You’ll Do:
Assist with planning, scheduling and delivery of fitness and recreation programs and events
Provide on-site support to instructors, staff and volunteers
Support onboarding, training and evaluation of instructors and volunteers
Prepare program materials and monitor program readiness
Respond to participant inquiries and assist with day-to-day program logistics
Help with equipment set-up, take-down and supply management
Promote safe participation by enforcing facility and program rules
Provide minor first aid within the scope of certification
Maintain records, reports and promotional materials
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Sound knowledge of the social, cultural, sport, fitness, youth and general interest and recreational needsin the Community.
Sound knowledge community recreation principles, practices and objectives
Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and recreational instruction.
Working knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures and policies governing the work and of modern
office methods and procedures.
Ability to plan, develop and coordinate programs and activities and to provide leadership and instruction
on same subject to a superior’s direction and approval within established program frameworks.
Ability to assist a superior in coordinating and administering the operations of a centre.
Ability to recruit, train and provide onsite supervision to volunteers and contract instructors.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community members
leaders, community partners and internal contacts.
Ability to prepare and maintain correspondence, records, reports, publicity and promotional material;
perform related clerical tasks as required; and to review and edit marketing materials and websites.
Ability to supervise and/or participate in various recreational and social activities.
Skill in the safe and proper use of a variety of equipment used in the programs.
DESIREABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of a two-year program in recreation at a recognized community college and sound related
community recreation experience; plus, some supervisory or leadership experience; or an equivalent
combination of training and experience.
LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES
Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia – Class 5
Standard First Aid Certificate and CPRC.
BCRPA Group Fitness and/or Specialty Module or BCRPA Personal training or equivalent
HOURS OF WORK:
This is a regular part-time working 20 hours a week. This position may require evening and weekend work.
As per Schedule B Note C,J of the Collective Agreement apply to this position.

Education : College, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma from a program of 1 year to 2 years
