Full job description

About ChainXY

Since 2017, ChainXY has been setting the industry standard for commercial real estate location intelligence across North America. Our platform tracks over 6 million brand locations across 8,000+ top chains, while our CenterXY dataset monitors 850,000+ retail tenants across 32,000 major shopping centers.

We are a pure-play data provider. Top retail, restaurant, financial, and real estate brands rely on our datasets to discover high-value market opportunities. Our stable, year-over-year growth is built on two pillars: uncompromised data quality and a client-focused mindset.

Why Join Us?

We are a small, high-autonomy engineering team that values technical rigor, clean system design, and direct business impact over bureaucracy. We are:

  • Practical: We built ChainXY because we needed accurate location data without paying inflated enterprise prices, so we built the solution ourselves. We take that same direct, builder mindset to every engineering problem we solve.
  • Open-Minded: There is rarely only one way to solve a technical issue. If you have a different perspective on system architecture, process automation, or product improvements, you have the opportunity to execute it.
  • Client Focused: Our datasets drive real business decisions for top commercial brands. We take pride in data quality, and delivering reliable tools our users count on every day.
  • AI-Native: We actively build LLM harnesses to automate workflows and ship faster. We focus on practical, high-value AI implementations that drive results and maintain clean and sustainable software standards.

Who This Role Is For

This role is designed for two types of backgrounds: 1) Software engineers who want to move away from purely executing specs written by others and take direct ownership of product direction and business scoping; or 2) Technical product managers with a software background who want to move back into a hands-on role where they write production code and build MVPs themselves.

What You’ll Do

  • Technical Leadership & Quality: Lead feature development across projects, reviewing code and working with other developers to ensure their implementations hit technical standards and fulfill business needs.
  • End-to-End System Ownership: Architect, build, test, deploy, and maintain robust software solutions spanning data scraping harnesses, spatial databases, backend APIs, internal administrative web tools, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Bridge Tech & Business Context: Translate high-level business goals into crisp technical specs, clear task breakdowns, and reliable delivery timelines.
  • Workflow & Pipeline Optimization: Partner with internal data extraction and QA teams to analyze bottlenecks, translating manual data verification workflows into automated technical solutions and streamlined toolsets.

What We’re Looking ForQualifications

  • 3+ years of paid professional software development experience shipping full-stack systems in production.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a closely related technical field.
  • Comfortable building scrappy, proof-of-concept solutions to validate business value and technical feasibility, with the discipline to turn successful experiments into clean, maintainable code.
  • Proven ability to handle ambiguous problems, make sound architectural trade-offs, and drive solutions to completion without micro-management.
  • Based in the Greater Vancouver Area (for hybrid office presence) with valid legal authorization to work in Canada.

Technical Capabilities

  • Deep proficiency in Python for web scraping, browser automation/CDP (Playwright, Puppeteer), network interception, and data pipeline orchestration.
  • Practical experience building backend APIs and services (Python or C# / .NET Core) and web interfaces using JavaScript / React.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL, schema design, and query optimization, specifically with PostgreSQL / PostGIS.
  • Firm grasp of software design patterns and automated testing frameworks (unit, integration, and E2E testing with Playwright).
  • Hands-on experience deploying containerized applications in cloud environments (AWS, Docker, CI/CD).
  • Experience leveraging LLM harnesses and modern AI dev tools to accelerate workflows.

Bonus Points

  • Experienced in testing LLM-backed applications/harnesses.
  • Experience handling geospatial data, GIS workflows, or mapping libraries (maplibre-gl, Google Maps API).
  • Experience with modern data tools and engines (DuckDB, Snowflake, Databricks, Apache Spark, or Apache Sedona).
  • Familiarity with modern frontend frameworks like Next.js.

Join us as a Product Engineer to shape innovative solutions that push the boundaries of technology! Your expertise will help us deliver high-quality products that make a real difference in our industry while advancing your career in a vibrant environment committed to excellence.

Pay: $70,000.00-$100,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Casual dress
  • Dental care
  • Extended health care
  • On-site parking
  • Paid time off
  • RRSP match
  • Vision care

Application question(s):

  • What is your earliest available start date, and do you have any timeline considerations we should know about?
  • Please describe a recent technical project you drove end-to-end that you are particularly proud of. What was the core challenge, your specific contribution, and the impact?
  • Please provide a link to your GitHub profile, technical blog, or portfolio.
  • Are you legally authorized to work in Canada?
  • Are you open to working in-person at our Vancouver office at least 2 days a week? (Yes/No)
  • How many years have you spent working full-time in a professional team environment shipping production-grade code (excluding internships, academic projects, and freelancing)?
