Protection & Control Technologist (CPC Technologist) - Construction Services (FTT)

What you'll do

The Construction Services CPC Technologist plays a critical role in the design, implementation, and construction of
protection, control, and communication systems that ensure the safe, reliable, and secure operation of BC Hydro’s electrical
grid. This position combines technical expertise with responsibilities in construction and maintenance operations while
maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. Construction Services CPC Technologists contribute to knowledge
transfer by supporting continuous improvement in safety practices and collaborating across departments to deliver projects
and respond to operational challenges. Work is performed under professional standards and ASTTBC reserved practice
requirements.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Installation, Commissioning, and Maintenance
  • Install, commission, and maintain protection and control equipment in substations and generation facilities.
  • Perform relay testing, calibration, and verification of protection schemes.
  • Configure and integrate SCADA systems and field devices during construction.
  • Validate real-time data flow between field equipment and control centers.
  • Construction Support
  • Interpret engineering drawings and apply CPC standards during installation.
  • Coordinate with civil and electrical construction teams to align CPC work with overall project timelines.
  • Ensure proper sequencing of CPC tasks during outages and commissioning windows.
  • Project Coordination
  • Plan and execute CPC activities for system upgrades and new builds.
  • Liaise with contractors, vendors, and internal teams to meet safety and quality standards.
  • Monitor progress and resolve technical issues to avoid delays.
  • Safety & Compliance
  • Conduct worksite hazard assessments and enforce BC Hydro safety protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC and BC Hydro standards during all work activities.
  • Participate in incident investigations and implement corrective actions.
  • Testing & Troubleshooting
  • Perform functional testing of protection and control systems prior to energization.
  • Diagnose and repair faults during commissioning.
  • Document test results and provide recommendations for corrective measures.
  • Documentation
  • Maintain accurate records of installation, configuration, and commissioning activities.
  • Prepare as-built drawings and technical reports for audit and compliance.
  • Mentorship
  • Provide on-the-job training and guidance to CVO CPC technologists when required.
  • Verify work meets quality and compliance requirements.
  • Judgment & Scope
  • Works under general supervision with responsibility for independent decision-making.
  • Exercises judgment in applying technical standards and resolving complex issues.

What you bring

  • As per IBEW Collective Agreement.
  • At least two years with industry experience, utility environments are preferred.
  • Completed a national diploma program in electrical / electronics engineering technology from an accredited institution,
preferably with a power and/or communications option
  • Eligibility for ASTTBC registration.
  • Class 5 BC Driver’s License
  • Advanced knowledge of protection and control systems considered an asset.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and apply internal construction and commissioning standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Project coordination and outage planning experience.
  • Effective collaboration and communication across teams and contractors.
  • Mentorship and training capability for trainees and junior technologists.
  • Commitment to safety, regulatory compliance, and professional ethics.
  • Adaptability to new technologies and continuous learning.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
