Job Summary

The Environmental Service Worker supports safe, efficient, and patient-centred operations across clinical and non-clinical areas at River Cree Weiss Surgical Care + (RCW). This role involves direct patient contact, contributing to overall facility readiness through patient transport, environmental support, equipment handling, and assistance to the interdisciplinary team.

Working in collaboration with perioperative and clinical teams, the Environmental Service Worker ensures that all clinical and non-clinical spaces meet established Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards and facility cleaning protocols, assists with room turnover, general stocking, and patient movement. The ESW will assist the OR / MDR Porter as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient Transport & Flow Support

· Safely porter patients to the Prep-Room, OR, or PACU in accordance with patient identification and transfer protocols.

· Transport patients from the PACU to the Extended Stay Unit or designated area as directed by clinical staff.

· Assist with patient discharge transport, including escorting patients to their vehicle or designated pick-up location.

· Support safe patient transfers using appropriate mobility aids and techniques in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards.

· Communicate any observed patient concerns or changes in condition promptly to nursing staff.

Equipment & Supply Handling

· Maintain environmental cleaning equipment in safe working condition.

· Ensure cleaning supplies are stocked, organized, and used according to manufacturer and facility guidelines.

· Report equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or supply shortages to appropriate leadership.

Clinical & Non-Clinical Area Cleaning

· Clean and disinfect all clinical areas including PACU, Extended Stay Unit spaces, clinic rooms, corridors, nursing stations, and storage areas.

· Maintain cleanliness of non-clinical spaces including offices, waiting areas, locker rooms, staff rooms, washrooms, and public access areas.

· Ensure environmental readiness of patient care areas through routine inspection and cleaning.

Waste Management & Infection Control

· Collect, segregate, and dispose of waste in accordance with facility policies and regulatory requirements.

· Handle contaminated materials using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.

· Follow established Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) procedures including hand hygiene and cleaning agent contact time requirements.

Terminal Cleaning Responsibilities

· Conduct terminal cleaning of each operating room and procedure room at the end of the surgical day, including floors, walls as required, equipment surfaces, storage areas, and furniture.

· Ensure all environmental cleaning checklists and documentation are completed accurately.

· Support periodic deep cleaning activities as outlined in the facility environmental cleaning schedule.

Safety & Professional Accountability

· Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards including safe lifting techniques, chemical handling procedures, and hazard reporting.

· Maintain awareness of emergency procedures and participate in facility safety processes as directed.

· Support a culture of patient safety, teamwork, and respect within the facility.

· Interacts with patients, families, and colleagues in a respectful and culturally sensitive manner consistent with RCW’s commitment to safe, inclusive care for all people.

· Comply with all applicable RCW policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

· A high school diploma is required; however, equivalent education combined with experience may be considered.

· Able to maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free environment.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

· Previous experience in environmental services, facility maintenance, community cleaning programs, caregiving environments, or community, family, or informal caregiving settings is recognized and valued.

· Knowledge of medical and surgical supplies, equipment, and sterile processing workflows.

· Knowledge of cleaning and disinfection practices in healthcare environments.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

· A competitive hourly wage will be offered to the successful candidate based on experience and skills. At the end of the probationary period a comprehensive benefit package will be provided.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT

· Must be able to perform the physical functions of this role including moderate to strenuous activity, prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting.

· Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

· You may be required to work days, evenings and weekends.
