Full job description

Overview

Athena Fencing Club is a community club in Burnaby. We coach fencers of all ages and levels, from people picking up a blade for the first time through to competitive athletes, and the people are the reason we love what we do.

We are looking for an experienced Videographer / Content Creator to help us teach fencing through the lens. Our coaches are the main talent. You will film them breaking down technique and drills, plus natural training footage, interviews with fencers who want to take part, and the occasional piece that shows what the club is really like.

You will do all of it yourself. Shoot, edit, post. This is not an entry level role. We are a small club without a creative team, so you will be the only person holding the camera and cutting the footage.

You will not be on your own, though. We work closely with whoever takes this on. You will plan alongside our founder, talk through what we are trying to say and who we are saying it to, and always have a second pair of eyes on things before they go out. You bring the craft and the ideas, we help make sure they land.

What you will do

  • Film coaches delivering instructional content, including technique breakdowns, drills, footwork and beginner explainers
  • Direct our coaches on camera. They are excellent teachers but not trained presenters, so part of this job is coaching the coach: helping them relax, land the point in the first few seconds, and run a take again without losing their energy
  • Shoot training and competition footage unobtrusively, plus interviews with members who would like to take part
  • Edit your own footage into finished short form video
  • Post to Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts, including captions and thumbnails
  • Bring us your own ideas and keep content going out consistently
  • Work within our consent and privacy practices

What you need

  • At least 2 years shooting and editing your own video, and 50 or more videos you took start to finish on your own
  • A portfolio or links showing work you personally shot and cut
  • Your own gear. A phone is completely fine
  • Confidence in CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro
  • A real feel for short form video, including hooks, pacing and captions
  • Comfort directing people on camera and getting a natural performance out of someone who is not a presenter
  • Availability in Burnaby including some evenings and weekends. A criminal record check is part of onboarding

No fencing experience needed. We will happily teach you the sport. What we cannot teach you is video, so this is probably not the right fit if your work was made as part of a production team, if your strongest work is graphic design or photography, or if you are early in your career and looking for a role to learn in. There is no crew here to lean on, so you need to be able to execute on your own.

Why this role

Real ownership, without the committee. You will pitch what gets filmed, film it, cut it, and see it published. We are a small, flat team, so you will work alongside us rather than through layers of approval. Our job is to give you what you need, get out of the way, and help you do the best work of your career. Yours will be out in the world every week.

How to apply

Send one link to a video you filmed AND edited yourself, start to finish. Tutorial style work is especially welcome, and rough and real beats polished and slow.

Tell us in a line or two what you shot it on, what you edited it in, and roughly how many videos you have made on your own.

No cover letter needed. We are not able to assess an application without the link, so please do include one.

Pay: $20.00-$28.00 per hour

Benefits:

  • Casual dress
  • Company events
  • Flexible schedule
  • On-site parking

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Burnaby, BC V5B 4V7: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Application question(s):

  • Have you personally filmed AND edited a video from start to finish, by yourself? (Yes/No)
  • How many years of experience do you have shooting and editing your own video? Number · Required: 2 or more
  • Roughly how many videos have you filmed and edited yourself in the last 12 months? Number · Required: 20 or more

Work Location: In person
