Full job description

Together We Can is looking for a caring, organized, and dependable Peer Support Worker to help create a welcoming and well-supported experience for participants entering our Spirit Path program in Terrace, BC. Peer Support Workers are tasked with caring for participants, delivering top-quality service, and implementing trauma-informed and culturally safe practices. They must adhere to the policies, procedures, and regulations established by Together We Can, along with any licensing and registration requirements.

What you will do

  • Ability to interact courteously, tactfully and empathetically with participants, co-workers, family members, visitors and the public
  • Establish and maintain rapport with participants
  • Provide progress reports/check-ins with participants to ensure accountability on their part for their progression within the TWC Spirit Path program
  • Help participants identify and articulate goals
  • Resolve conflicts and provide crisis intervention
  • Analyze, make decisions and resolve problems concerning participant care
  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
  • Facilitate getting participants to and from their appointments outside of the facility
  • Deal with any medical emergencies within their scope
  • Ensure, overall, that the operation of the facility is safely maintained
  • Monitor and supervise the activities and behaviours of participants
  • Maintain safety and security within the facility
  • Dispense and observe participants taking their medications as required, and record on the client’s individual Medication Administration Record (MAR) sheet
  • Coordinate the chore lists and the participants’ responsibilities lists
  • Respond to incoming calls in a manner that respects the participant’s needs and the confidential nature of Together We Can’s operation.
  • Communicate regularly with Together We Can staff by e-mail and in writing in the communication log during shifts regarding participant issues, such as at-risk participants, notable behaviours from the reporting day, crisis management, household maintenance, household or office supplies, and any other areas of concern or unusual occurrences.
  • Occasional progress reports and client check-ins
  • Conduct urinalysis testing
  • Provide enhanced participant support when individuals are ill or require extra attention, ensuring timely monitoring, wellness checks, and responsive care delivered directly by trained staff as required under registration and society regulations.
  • Provide direct oversight of volunteers during any peer-support-style tasks by remaining present or readily available, ensuring volunteers carry out their activities safely and in accordance with program expectations, registration, and society requirements.

What you bring

  • First Aid & Naloxone Training
  • Together We Can Volunteer Training Program Certification

Skills and strengths

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with compassion towards men who suffer with addiction issues
  • Willingness to continue training/education in addiction recovery and therapeutic regimens
  • Basic phone/computer/electronics skills (email, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Internet, Fax, Copier, etc.)
  • Time management in prioritizing and carrying out assigned tasks with minimal supervision
  • Non-violent crisis intervention & conflict de-escalation skills

Pay: $23.00-$25.00 per hour
