Full job description

About us

Southbrook is a small, fully remote accounting firm serving owner-managed businesses across Canada. We are compilation and tax focused, no audit. Our clients are incorporated small businesses, professionals, and their families, and most of them stay with us for years. We are small enough that you will know every client file you touch and have a real say in how the practice runs.

The role

We are hiring an Accounting & Tax Manager to take ownership of a portfolio of corporate and personal tax files, from compilation through to filing and planning. You will report to the Managing Partner and have one direct report, a Staff Accountant, whose development and workload you will own.

This is a hands-on manager role. You will still prepare complex files yourself, not just review them.

What you will do

  • Prepare and review compilation engagements (CSRS 4200) for owner-managed corporations
  • Prepare and review T2 corporate returns, T1 personal returns, T4/T5 slips, and HST filings
  • Supervise and develop one Staff Accountant: assign work, set expectations, give feedback, and grow their technical skills
  • Review files prepared by your direct report and other year-end staff, with clear and teachable review notes
  • Lead tax planning meetings with clients: compensation mix, dividends versus salary, income splitting, capital dividends, loss utilization, and year-end planning
  • Coordinate with our outside tax specialist firm on complex projects such as reorganizations, estate freezes, section 85 rollovers, and share sales, and act as the point of contact between the client and the specialist
  • Handle CRA correspondence, reviews, and audit queries
  • Own your portfolio's deadlines and workflow in Financial Cents
  • Help improve our templates, checklists, and processes as the firm grows

What you bring

  • CPA designation in good standing
  • 10+ years in Canadian public accounting
  • 3+ years at manager level, with demonstrated file review and staff supervision responsibility
  • Deep small business and owner-managed tax expertise, including integration, safe income basics, CDA, RDTOH, and shareholder loans
  • Strong T1 and T2 preparation and review skills
  • Comfortable leading client conversations on your own, including planning discussions.
  • Experience with Caseware and TaxCycle
  • Experience coaching or training staff in a remote setting
  • Able to work independently in a remote environment and keep your own files moving

Nice to have

  • CPA In-Depth Tax Program (completed or in progress)
  • T3 and estate return experience
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks Online

Pay: $110,000.00-$150,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Company events
  • Profit sharing
  • RRSP match
  • Vision care
  • Work from home

Experience:

  • Canadian public accounting: 10 years (required)
  • Management: 3 years (required)
  • Caseware & Tax Cycle: 5 years (required)

Licence/Certification:

  • CPA in good standing (required)

Work Location: Remote
