The team plays a critical role in supporting individuals in crises and being a transforming influence in our community. transition back into the community, working closely with the Correctional Service of Canada and community partners.

Working at an emergency shelter like Belkin House allows team members to contribute to a space where people, in vulnerable situations, feel protected, heard, and valued. Shelter workers also gain purpose through service, teamwork, and the chance to help clients move toward greater stability and hope. All while gaining valuable work and life experience.

Position Purpose

Shelter workers support the safe, respectful, and effective operation of the shelter by monitoring guest activities, setting boundaries based on program policies, maintaining facility safety, and providing practical and compassionate support to individuals experiencing homelessness. The role upholds The Salvation Army’s mission, policies, and safety standards while contributing to a positive, structured, and supportive shelter environment.

Key Responsibilities

Guest Safety & Shelter Operations

  • Monitor guest activity and maintain shelter policies and restrictions

  • Conduct bed checks and safety rounds

  • Maintain cleanliness, order, and safety of the shelter and grounds

  • Inspect neighboring properties and safely remove paraphernalia in accordance with the Good Neighbour Policy

Documentation & Compliance

  • Complete basic intake, orientation, and required paperwork

  • Maintain accurate logbooks and incident reports

  • Safeguard confidential guest information at all times

Guest Support & Engagement

  • Provide practical, personal, and moral support to guests

  • Work to support guest case plans and goals

  • Provide meal tickets, give access to our client clothing closet

  • Engage guests in appropriate activities (e.g., games, crafts, sports)

Collaboration & Professional Conduct

  • Liaise with external agencies and referral partners as required

  • Attend staff meetings, training, and workshops as directed

  • Foster a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment

  • Perform general administrative and reception duties as needed

Education & Experience

Education & Certifications

  • Post-secondary education in Social Services or a related field, or equivalent experience

  • First Aid and CPR certification

  • Training in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and mediation

  • Vulnerability Assessment Tool (VAT) training.

Experience

  • Minimum one year experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness

  • Knowledge of homelessness, mental health, addiction, and concurrent disorders

Additional Requirements

  • Criminal Record Check (Criminal Records Review Program)

  • Intermediate computer skills

  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines

  • Strong commitment to confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, and respectful practice

  • Universal Precautions

  • Immunization for Hepatitis B

  • Vaccination against Tuberculosis.

The salary range is based on the Collective Agreement, not any other factors.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $25.10 to $25.35 with a maximum of $25.60.

Compensation:

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
